Rave In2 the Joy Fantastic Question

b4 Rave In2 was released, were the extended songs on there unreleased or did Prince just go back after Rave Un2 was done and just extend the songs himself?

The answer to all you questions is BOTH. Though most are not extended just reworked.

reworked would mean different instrumentation or arrangements, extended means longer.

Thanks. Or sometimes he changed the beats. One should note that when Prince extends things, they get a bit reworked as well. I would say it's safe to say that "extended" means that the song adds over a minute of music to length of the original...though not always as in Pretty Man

My breakdown of the remixes...

Rave - Obviously an extended dance version

Hot wit U - Almost completely reworked in terms of sound and lyrics. It incorporates Nasty Girl into it.

Undisputed - Get the same treatment as Hot wit you
GRES - Just extended

Man O War - little hard t tell where the reworkings of this song are...it's subtle, but noticeable.

Pretty Man - An Extra 30 or so seconds is "added". I am very sure that this is
the original version that was chopped for some reason for the first version of Rave

I don't think there are any other differences, though I rarely listen to the other songs except for Beautiful Strange. I never listen to the original Rave either.

Tangerine and Baby Knows also have a very slight extension.

What about the 12" America. Extended or reworked?

Neither, it's just the full length version, as it was recorded.
Several of the 80's so-called "extended versions" are actually just the full
length version, before it was edited down for single release or inclusion on
an album.

Back to the Rave question...

It's worth noting that most of the remixes and extended versions done for
'Rave In2' were completed before 'Rave Un2' had even been released. Prince
had announced that there would be a 'remix' version of the album available
a bit later at the same time he announced 'Rave Un2's' release. Though it
was originally intended that 'Rave In2' would contain a lot of new tracks
and not just remixes, in the end though only 1 new track was added.

But to answer their question, it's extended in comparison to the album version.

I hate the fact that "Baby Knows" cuts off about 30 seconds after launching in2 this potentially awesome extended version.
