Is Prince the only Artist that releases a cd every year? We bitch we moan because we all may not agree on the latest cd that he releases, some may say too much R&B too much rock or too much this and that but have we all come to our senses and just thought about if Prince only released an album every 4 or 5 years we or should I say myself would go insane think about MJ fans, Janet Fans or Madonna Fans they wait for years to hear a suck a^^ album, granted it may not be the Prince of old his work is beyond times and DaMan is reachin 50 years old. Now back to my questions is DaMan the only artist that releases an album once a year? "Live 4 Love"

These days, Prince probably is the only artist that releases one every year, or at least, almost every year.
However, during the days of Prince's reign, almost everyone released an album a year except Michael Jackson and even he released one with his brothers inbetween his own albums. Hell, in 1979, Rick James released two albums. I don't see what the problem is these days. Since these new artists don't play instruments or come up with original melodies, I don't see why they wouldn't have an album coming out every other month. Back in the day, everyone released an album a year and had to write the songs, come up with an original melody (not a sample of someone else's), get together with the band, rehearse the songs, and go in the studio, record, and do whatever else they had to do. They even made edited versions for the 45s and longer versions for the 12 Inches all in that same year. These dead asses these days wait two or three years between albums so they can milk the albums for every last cent they can get out of them. It's not about music anymore, it's about money and whoever is dumb enough and has bad enough taste to buy their shit. Hell, I need to get me a recording contract and make a song called "Buy This Shit Suckers". I'm not a musician but, hey, neither are they. Andy is a four letter word.

Yeah, there's odd years, like I think 1983 when he was busy making the Purple Rain movie, nothing I think in '97 after Emancipation. And 2005 there was no new album.
People are saying because of internet downloads, the album is dying, as people are more and more just downloading individual tracks. That should really be exploited by someone like Prince who can create new tracks very quickly. He could just dispense with online albums and put up an ever-growing list of individual tracks with samples, then people could just go through and pick the ones they like the sound of, more choice equalling more downloads and more money.

Stereolab seems to have new records out every year, or at least a new e.p.
I'm sure if I thought really hard, I could think of other prolific artists...but who wants to think really hard?

ANI DIFRANCO!!! She has released a new album every year since 1990... And like Prince, some of them have been double discs. Plus she releases "official bootlegs" at about three a year. Hell, I need to get me a recording contract and make a song called "Buy This Shit Suckers". I'm not a musician but, hey, neither are they. It's absolutely all about the money. This doesn't just apply to hip-hop, or singers who can't play. There are plenty of bands out there taking their sweet time between album releases. If there is one difference, back in the day an album could easily be 6 to 9 songs. Typical album now is almost double the number of songs, which has made it easier to milk one album for two or three years. Unfortunately increasing the number of songs hasn't necessarilly increased the quality of the albums. . [Edited 8/31/06 16:06pm] "What kind of fuck ending is that?"

Aimee Mann seems to do the same...(but most of her follow up cd's end up being "live" albums...or in this years case a christmas album...) DiFranco is proof positive that you can release quality music year after year and not have "drama" with record labels... and Mann is proof that you can create your own label that gets the music in the big chains and tour and make your fanbase happy year after year. hand claps for two strong and independent women. Wherent there more than 5 lps in that time? Gold come exodus Emancipation C & D Vault Truth NPS Rave Yeah, but that's not releasing an album every year, that's releasing an average of an album a year overall. Of course The Vault and C&D were contractual obligation albums released by Warners at the same time as Prince as the artist was realeasing Emancipation and Rave, not his choice, Exodus and NPS are technically NPG releases not Prince, and The Truth was part of the Crystal Ball collection rather than an album in it's own right.

Well if you discount The Truth then you should include Crystal Ball in it's stead. If you include albums made but not released it's even more impressive - from 1993-1999 Goldn**** Come 1-800-New-Funk I'll Do Anything tracks The Undertaker Exodus Gold C&D Emancipation x3 Crystall Ball x3 The Truth Karmasutra The Vault NewPower Soul Rave I concede not all are solely Prince albums but nonetheless impressive output.

Prince may be one of the few major recording artists that releases an album every year or so, but compared to an artist like Muslimgauze, that's still bugger all.

I agree, seems to me that approach would suit him well. "I would say that Prince's top thirty percent is great. Of that thirty percent, I'll bet the public has heard twenty percent of it." - Susan Rogers, "Hunting for Prince's Vault", BBC, 2015

firstly, Newpower Soul is an NPG album. So if you're gonna include that then you
should include Goldnigga and Exodus as well. secondly, The Black album was not released in 1988, it was released in 1994, but was originally intended for release in 1987. thirdly, The Beautiful Experience is an EP or Maxi-Single, not an album. fourthly, The Truth was released in 1998 as a bonus disc with Crystal Ball, it was originally intended for release in 1997. .
