Something In The Water--Glitch...

Here's something I've not heard discussed before...

...every copy of 1999 I've heard (cassette and CD) has had a big scratch sound in the middle of "Something In The Water"--why?

Has anyone got a copy without it?

Is it different in different countries (I live in the UK)?

Ever tried cleaning the CD? It may have something 2 do with the big glob of chewing gum stuck on that part of the disk.

If you read my post, you'll see I said it happens in every copy of the CD and cassette I've heard.

At what part of the song does it happen in, at what time in the song?

Oh yeah, I never noticed that before.

It's not a fault though,
It's noise on the master tape.
In fact it's most likely Prince himself in the studio
while he was recording the vocals.

There's what initially sounds like a vinyl click at about 2:48, but I'm pretty sure it's Prince slapping his hand (immediately afterwards he exclaims "Bitch!"). Then again at 2:57 there's some noise like a bit of a scuffle.

I think it's Prince clapping after his gospel style screams he needs a little help...

i think that was intended, with old prince you'll never know.
With this new prince you would have that removed because it didn't sound "perfect".His music is too polished these days.

Right on, that ONA would be so much better if it was just Prince and a piano one take. I haev much better bootlegs like "Rare Intimate Performances."

It's in the recording, as opposed to a cd glitch. It sounds like the mic being pounded by something.

Since y'all solved this one, can anyone speak on the We Can Funk glitch? It skips @ "I'm scared", second chorus I believe. Sounds like, "I'm sca-ared"...

I'm still wondering if it was intentional or what... confused

Here's something I've always wondered about...

On the Vanity 6 album,at the end of "He's So Dull",you hear a man saying something like "Glasses! I have...glasses!"

He has a real deep voice (like Big Chick,P's bodyguard at the time). It also sounds like he's falling down the stairs or something.

Also, you hear this SAME guy on "Pop Life" near the end of the song. The music stops and you hear this ruckus, and a man can be heard saying something like "Get out of my house" and then the people start clapping or something.

Anybody know the scoop on this?

I heard that too. e got stuff thrown at him when he opened for the Stones and this made reference to it, it may be the actual tape from the show even. I used to love shit like this in Prince's music. He made you think and guess what was going on. Now he's to straight forward and there's no more surprises or weird segments that take repeated listens to figure out.

Ur 2 cents is basically my 2 cents lol i agree ... the more accidental bites Prince used in his songs ... wow they just put my mind in a race with itself ... the rawer the take the closer we r 2 the real magic biggrin ...

something in the water is an xample of the freedom a song can have ... or its shown of the maker of the song ... i always listen closely 2 hear all the different layers ... Prince seldom staged things back then ... everything seemed more intrinsic ...

damn there r many differences today in the prince world but r they 4 better or worse ... ?? hmmm ... im gonna leave the deciding 2 him lol

Pop Life is one of my favorite songs, and I never knew what that soundclip was about! It sounded like at a racetrack or something to me, and it used to kinda scare me, that jarring clang..

Also never consciously noticed the other glitches mentioned here.. This thread is an example of why I enjoy the org. biggrin Enriched listening..

i gotta add ... 'Something in the water” ranks close 2 #1 in my books ... if there was ever a song that could make me know pain ... yikes it would be the one cry ...

the whole bit at the end is shocking... the screams send a piercing wave down my spine enough 2 make me loose my mind, i have 2 keep reminding myself that its an act but u never know with prince really lol ... the topic of the song, well perhaps we can all relate 2 it at some point ... wanting something that u cant have, deprevation hurts if u let it ... & illusions well double ouch ... anyway what a fab number music oh yah 'pop life' is cool 2 lol
