Did this Prince comment offend you old school hippies?

I was reading old Prince interviews and there was this interview where Prince was asked about not playing songs like Head or Dirty Mind anymore because of his religion, and Prince mentioned the fact that he was glad that his freaky fans no longer liked his music. He was obviously talking about us purple hippies who love his dirty, crazy stuff. He doesn't like us, is what I am saying. Should we be offended?

The actual comment, from Ebony Magazine:

"("You get the audience you deserve. When I played freaky music, I got freaky audiences. I finally straightened it out."

I like being freaky ya putz.

Nope!! Didn't offend me at all cause I'm a freaky fan that does still like his music! wink

Besides I felt he meant the fans that weren't into his music because it was good. He was referring to the ones that were only into it because of the sexual overtures in it. For these kinds of fans the music was justification for their actions, more or less an excuse, if you will. Once Prince strayed from that, so did they, leaving behind fans that appreciate the music, the good, the bad, the freaky, and the righteous.

I'd simply say I don't, now are we going 'Uptown' or what? lol

Seriously though, if I were close enough to be able to ask him to play something, I wouldn't be dumb enough to ask him to play something, I already know he won't. wink

Prince has grown and so have I.
Still like his old stuff though, been a Prince-head since 78 and if he won't play the freaky stuff any more so what. I'll just play them myself. (rarely play it anyway) bored

Prince is a control freak, this we know.

But we bought those records and CDs, and now, they're not just his any more... He's the creator, but he put them out there for an audience... we are that audience, and they are now partly ours, not to own, but experience forever. He doesn't have a lease on that. yay!

No offense taken. If he doesn't want to play those songs anymore that doesn't mean I won't ever hear them again.....I have the CD's and will listen to them as often as I want.

I also heard him tell Tavis Smiley that back in the days it was cool to cuss and have explicit lyrics because there wern't alot of other artists doing that sort of stuff. Now it's everywhere and for him it's like "Been there, done that".

I'm just grateful to him for making the old stuff, can't change the fact that it was funky as hell.

Keepin in mind Prince is close to 50. It is one thing for a 26 year old to talk about grinding with Nikki but now? I don't want to hear my grandpas friend talking about getting it on. Not cool no no no! no no no!
[[Disclaimer - I am joking]]
He has enough stuff in can where he can not perform the racy stuff and still have a lot of hits performed.

I'm not an old school fan but I love his "freaky" stuff. (i never thought it was all that weird or racy shrug ) I wasn't offened by what he said. I just see it as yet another in a long line of Prince opening his mouth without thinking. Prince: makes great music;says some stupid shit.

He didn't get rid of the freaky fans when he quit those songs. We're all still here. I wasn't offended because knowing Prince he probably would have said something different the next few minutes.

His old songs are very good. It aLl depends in a persons state of mind.I can understand at his age and his fanbase age, he doesn't want to sing 'Head' before a live audience, but if a fan still likes these songs, it doesn't make them 'freaky' It just makes them normal Prince fans.'Darling Niki' and Violet The Organ Grinder' are masterpieces in my opinion and always will be and if fans like these songs it doesn't make them dirty or nonreligious or anything. It just means they have good taste in music and if he lets his religion even define these masterpiece songs as 'dirty'being the artist that he is, makes it a shame.

Since Prince won't sing the original lyrics on Violet The Organ Grinder, then how about some New lyrics on that music because the music is slaming!

I was kind of offended when I first heard Prince say that, but he's got to remember it's those freaky fans that brought him this far, and are still stickin by him.
