sign of the times, the song itself...Prince was/is using his space in society to address the not so pretty real, the ugly truth. he address the issues of aids, crack, heroin, hunger, and abortion, these were and still are are real issues.
and, sending ppl to the moon?? folks want to do this again openly since 2004-2005 and not only the moon now, it's mars. in 1986 the space shuttle challenger exploded upon take-off. then, 2003, space shuttle columbia explodes as it is re-entering the earth's atmosphere. yet, these astronauts still want to explore. i know some that would leave their wife and children to go to mars...tomorrow. a vehicle goes from 16K miles per hour to landing in less than an hour when it enters the mars atmosphere to land on the planet. will one day man might find a sign there telling them to go back to earth and love the planet so that earth does not wind up looking like mars? the whole album is awesome,,,just dig Dorthy Parker and Play in the Sunshine and Strange Relationship and If I Was Your Girlfriend. this album is a piece of art in motion. it's an awesome ride going through time... ~honey is b-ing 1 with the 1~

The first time I heard this song, it really threw me. I didn't dislike it, but I wasn't sure what to make of it.
Now I freaking love it! Let's hear it for The Ballad of Dorothy Parker! "A Watcher scoffs at gravity!"

I have been in love with this song since 7th grade. When I first heard him perform it live (think it was Hit N Run tour), I almost had a heart attack!
They lyrics are so witty and sexy. The bass is just thumping. The imagery...oh man, it is just a WONDERFUL song! Sign is a phenomenal album. It has long been one of my favorite Prince albums. perfection is a fallacy of the imagination...

It's undoubtedly one of the most Joni Mitchell-esque songs he has ever written, IMHO. It's also one of my favorite songs and the imagery that is used in the song is truly beautiful. Sign O The Times is always one of those albums that has TIMELESS all over it, because every song was a classic and the production on this song and album was just ahead of its time back in the day. Check me out and add me on:

Easily my all time favorite Prince song (hence the handle ), Anyway, this song is like Joni Mitchell met Sly Stone and had a baby. It's whimsical, melodic and a bit off and that's why it works so well. The lyrics alone are worth the price of admission, however, he hits you with some of the most adventurous, yet simplistic instrumental work of his career. The bassline and keys are outstanding on this cut!
Prince was on fire with the Sign LP, it's an astonishing work on so many varied levels. How many artists can come up with a lyric as brilliant as "my pants were wet, they came off, but she didn't see the movie cuz she hadn't read the book first"? Great narrative, great song...it's pure bliss! [Edited 8/30/06 22:32pm]

That's dead on! The rhythm track and bubbling keys and everything is so Sly during 'Riot' and 'Fresh', but still somehow Prince.

That is part of what makes Prince so great. Unlike today's popular artists, Prince fuses his inspirations and channels them in his own unique way. Today's popular artists just copy their inspirations. There are so many Janet and MJ wannabes out there now that it's sickening. They're just generic. Originality is severly lacking. perfection is a fallacy of the imagination...
