I like Prince's stuff from when he started out to about maybe up until Lovesexy, Diamonds and Pearls at the very latest. I just really enjoy Prince in the 80s when he was in his PRIME. I'm not saying that his current tunes aren't good, but in the 80s he was at his best. At least in my opinion. Prince with the Revolution was amazing and the best band. But times change, and people and their tastes change. But if you look at all the people I like --I like all of thier stuff from the 80s.

Case in Point--

Prince--Purple Rain
Michael Jackson--Bad (Yeah I like it better than Thriller)
Madonna--Whatever album Like a Virgin was on.

The list goes on and on!

Prince just had it then, I dunno, that special je ne sais quo that made people flock to him. And I like that! biggrin

I agree with most of what you said except that I think NPG was his best band ever.

Jackson's best album was Off The Wall, nothihng else even comes close.

Madonna.....well if you like her.....I'm sorry.

Those of you who have had the opportunity to catch C.O.E.D. live please chime in! THAT IS musical Genius! And C.O.E.D. feat. Wendy & Lisa was simply PERFECT! So Wendy and Lisa = Genius???? A unanimous YES!

So maybe it's Wendy and Lisa who are the REAL geniuses here, and not Prince. hmmm

4 #1 hits on the Billboard Hot 100 Charts by Prince (1978-89) :

When Doves Cry
Lets Go Crazy
Kiss
Batdance

All 4 written/composed by Prince (David Z had a hand in Kiss). Were these songs written/composed by Wendy or Lisa? Hell no! Thread Over!!
cool

EDIT: I will give Wendy & Lisa a lot of credit for lending some helping hands with Around A World In A Day (The REAL W&L debut album). THAT is the only Prince album that would have NEVER happen without the girls giving him new ideas to consider.

Even a genius has peaks and none operate in a vacuum (all take inspriation from others) so just because he isn't making music of the calibre he did, doesn't make him any less of a genius, musically speaking.

Prince doesn't exist.

Would we still be having this discussion about W&L?.... I don't think so.

lol I hear ya. Prince had been around for years without Wendy. Lisa was with him but cool by herself. When Wendy came in, get those two together and things started to change to the "artsy/fartsy". Prince never snapped back even after they were gone.

interesting viewpoint. :hmm:So you don't think Prince was capable of the artsy fartsy on his own w/o wendy/lisa? (not a sarcastic question meant to argue, honestly want your input)

See by the tone of your post you rank the artsy/fartsy Prince ahead of the Funk inspired Prince that vainandy and so many of us love. Many people do that on this site as to say that W&L made Princes music more complex, when some of us think they took away his originality with that 60s inspired retread. The point is this thread is pointless because music is subjective. Some people love his time with W&L, others think its shit. Regardless everyone has different taste so what blows you away maybe underwhelming to others. I'm just trying to figure out what your goal is with this thread. Your avatar denotes a bias so ultimately you will sway the responses to suit your own perspective. Also, why do you keep changing the title of the thread?

He's very capable of being artsy/fartsy without them. Just look at all the artsy/fartsy stuff he's done since they've been gone.....Full albums like "The Truth" and "Karmasutra". Songs like "Starfish and Coffee", "3 Chains O' Gold", "Damn U", "The Ride", etc., much of "The Rainbow Children" and "The Vault" albums.

Do I think he was capable before them? Yes. He always liked folks like Joni Mitchell, he just didn't dare release something like that during the days before them. He probably would have recorded artsy/fartsy stuff back then and just kept it to himself for his personal listening. They kind of influenced him and gave the courage to release such stuff and put it out to the public. We all have our "nerdy" sides. Hell, I love some stuff from The Carpenters but I wouldn't dare play it at a party.

Alone, we are alone, and we are nothing.

Associated with others, we are something more, through interactions, through established bonds, we feel, we are not changed but we are inhanced. Our most stella beauty comes out only with the bonds of another. It's part of the human condition.

Prince has broken all bonds. If you are not in his world you are out. It's lame. It's sad. It's tragic to the kingdom.

Bonds don't take no time to open, they only take the willingness to be open. Trust, and Prince trusts no one.

Maybe W&L, wendy, was that sister he always needed.

However, through their splitup, this doesn't make prince any less of a genius, however it makes him a little less useless.
News: Prince pulls his head out his ass in the last moment.
Bad News: Prince wasted too much quality time doing so.

i believe Prince is definitely a musical genius on his own. Having said that I will say this Wendy once said that when she worked with Prince she would always nudge him away from repeating himself and reusing musical ideas. She said she would politely tell him no you already did that lets come up with something else. I have noticed in post W&L days P has recycled certain musical elements and ideas way more than he did in his earlier career when Wendy was around. Also I don't count it as a coincidence that most musicians and artists from his camp have their input in constant question all the time. I think P knew that because he was out front and the Revolution was billed as more of a touring band, many people would be hesitant to believe they had any real influence or impact on P musically during those years. To add insult to injury people like Andre Cymone, Dez Dickerson and W&L would continue to be cast in the same light by some (emphasis on some) even after they parted ways with P. It is impossible to measure their worth unless P himself steps up and credits them with the input/influence. Its obvious by now though that W&L brought something to the table and whether you feel its better or worse without them well thats subjective but I feel they were definitly carrying their own weight while they were part of the Revolution but P is still a genius and the driving force behind his own success.

I think prince needs someone that dares too tell him how it is... W&L or Warner's it doesn't matter. He has proven over and over again that he is a catalyst to influencial people around him. As long as they dare to be critical.

Good post. I recalled Wendy poked fun at interviewer too when was asked what she and Lisa been doing since 1986, and that can be insulting too since they done a lot even more than when they was with Prince. And also that Wendy was the one at that time period who dared and challenged Prince while everyone else was too afraid to voice their opinion. So I give Wendy more credited of the way she changed the Revolution to a different direction. Also I agreed about the part. People indeed questioned of what former bandmates contribute and that happens all the time. Like Andre he putted a lot on the table and did a lot than being credit for and also with Wendy and Lisa with the Purple Rain debated of how much they contribute

I think Prince is a genius. His music is moving and inventive. Granted not all his music can please all, but he's on a journey. I view the Wendy and Lisa period in his life to a color he used in painting, just a spot in a picture that is not yet completed. Prince has more to come, and the painting he is portraying is still left unfinished.
I wish U love & peace.
