someone that knows music... Erotic City and When Doves Cry??? I gave a co-worker a ride to work and i had Erotic City in the CD... he said "you know this bass is the one from When Doves Cry"
i said "when doves cry doesn't have a bass..." he said "I know he slowed it down and built this song around it" I was like "oh really" and did not say anything else. is that even possible?

There should be a rule that when a person gets in a Prince fans car they should relax and don't say nothing, but enjoy the vibe . Lastly, I wish I knew the answer to your question, but I'm sure someone out there does.

He's wrong you were right. "Doves" does not have bass. P took it out before the album was done. "Erotic City" was P's take on a club hit called "White Horse" by Laid Back. P went on to say that George Clinton/Parliment influenced Erotic City, but one needs only listen to "White Horse" to see where at least some of his ideas came from. . No it's not true. When Doves Cry did indeed originally have a bassline, before Prince decided to get rid of it. But it was completely different to Erotic City's bassline. Erotic City has a simple 3 note descending bass line repeated throughout the song. When Doves Cry had a more complex bassline that followed the root note of the changing chords and had more of an ascending pattern (some of the live performances over the years actually had the bassline reintroduced into the song, pretty much as it had originally been recorded).

When Doves Cry uses the tom sound in it's drum pattern to create a bass line without the traditional guitar or keyboard bass. There is a bass line created by the tuning of the electronic toms.
So there is something that acts as a bassline, but it's certainly not a traditional bass line. and it does remind me of the way the (far effected) toms of Erotic City happen every now and then in the song, so I can see how he would think this. or, are those toms in the mix of erotic city?
