Should Prince have officially released "Adore" My favorite Prince song.
I remember back in '87 in New York, 98.7 Kiss FM played this song on a "Jam it or slam it" set and it became the #1 requested song for months. I was a sixteen year old Prince lover who was suprised when even older folks would shout "That's my jam" whenever it was played. Does anyone think this would have hit #1 on the charts had it been officially released?

Hi dseann, Adore is my favorite Prince track, too.
I always thought it could have been a big hit. It also could have opened him up to an entirely new audience, because it's totally different from almost any single he ever released. It shows one more style of music that he can do masterfully.

Probably one of the biggest mistakes Prince ever made was not releasing this song as a single. It would have definetly gone to number 1, no doubt about that. In fact there were a bunch of songs from SOTT that would have been massive had they been released. I'm not a fan of "old Prince". I'm not a fan of "new Prince". I'm just a fan of Prince. Simple as that

A proper/official hit single in the pop charts enjoyed by the mainstream

adore got a gigantic amount of radio play.now with the play it got it would be a major hit..but back then the charts didnt use radio play to determine position like the do now.it was a single/45 driven market.

i love that prince has a few "unofficial" hits that got radio play without ever being released as singles, or b-sides that got almost as much play as the a-sides.

No.
That fact that it has passed into pop glory on its own-- SAYS A LOT!!! And makes it more of a treasure.

It would have been a major hit on the R&B charts, but I don't think it would have done that well on the pop charts. In my area, the song received tremendous airplay.Out of all the albums that Prince has recorded,'SOTT' is the one that has the most songs that should have been released as singles, imo.

I guess if he had released it there would have been a video which is what I was begging for. Just being selfish.

I am aware of that as I heard most of his b-sides back in the day from buying alot of his singles, thus the reason for this thread....but do you think it could have been a #1 selling single? By the way I travel to the U.S. often but have lived away from the country for the last 12 years, I thought charts were still based on record sales....you live and you learn.

I agree and I think SOTT was his best album ever, bar none. Purple Rain just happened to be the most popular.

"Adore" was a hit when SOTT dropped. The song *still* enjoys major rotation on Quiet Storm-type urban R&B programming.

We would've gotten the song on vinyl, probably with the crowd noise crossfade edited out, and maybe even a B-side. And who knows we might have even got an extended version on the 12".
