Well she mostly likes just the simple Top 40 stuff. She kinda like Black Sweat but it hasn't made her a fan.

Hmmm... ok I'd recommend: "When Doves Cry" "Little Red Corvette" "1999" "Raspberry Beret" "Kiss" "Sign O' the Times" as an appetizer...

Hmmm... ok I'd recommend: "When Doves Cry" "Little Red Corvette" "1999" "Raspberry Beret" "Kiss" "Sign O' the Times" as an appetizer... I once knew a guy who swore he hated Prince. He didn't like When Doves Cry, Alphabet St, anything. Then one day he asked to borrow a cd, and I lent him Sign O The Times. He didn't want to listen, and was saying he'd hate it before he'd even played it. He didn't like Prince's style. He was put off by the fact he "looks weird". Well, he did hate it. I've found you can't convert someone that doesn't already like his style. I had another friend who "kind of" liked "some stuff" Prince had done around Diamonds & Pearls. I played Housequake for him and he loved it.

I was singing Erotic City to myself one day and my friend asked me wtf I was singing so I made him listen to it and now he loves it....but that's about as far as his interest goes.

Oh I've tried to convert my friends but they just say something like
"he looks so gay" or "he sings like a girl" (referring to his falsetto). And it drives me mad. pull your cell phone out and call your next of kin; we're about to get funky

It can't be done.
Friends will turn on you becuase of your love of Prince. You must absolutely keep this a secret from them, and never never let them find out about the org.

If your friend likes typical Top 40 stuff, maybe My Computer, Somebody's Somebody, The Holy River, Incense and Candles, A Million Days and stuff like that would be appreciated. And don't forget to hide 2 Nigs United 4 West Compton in there somewhere.

I don't try to get people into Prince anymore, because my success rate is extremely low. As mattperry said: "I've found you can't convert someone that doesn't already like his style". -After a few disastrous incidents, this is the conclusion I've come to as well. However, some songs that non-fans I've met (who don't already hate him) tend to like/accept are: Little Red Corvette, When Doves Cry, Cream, Raspberry Beret, Purple Rain and, to some extent, She's Always In My Hair and Strange Relationship. I also managed to make someone like The Question Of U by playing it over and over again (heheh), but alas, their interest was limited to this one song. Maybe you know cooler people than I do - I hope so! Well, lucky-lucky us. Lucky-lucky-luck.

To me there is no converting anyone to Prince. They have to discover Prince for themselves. Try taking your friend to a Prince concert (if there ever is going to be another one). Many were converted after seeing the Musicology tour.
People have to be hooked in on their own. For example, shockingly I was driving my little cousin the other day. She is totally hip hop/R&B. She watches 106 Park everyday and I actually feel old around her because when she talks about all these acts, half the time I have no idea who she's talking about. Anyway, I happen to be playing "I Would Die 4 U". She was like who's that, I like that song. I said Prince. Ofcourse she was surprised but she asked me to play the song over three times and ask me for a copy!!! I was shocked. I think it had a lot to do with her recent break up with her boyfriend (you know how it is when you are 16) and the lyrics and groove caught her. I'm sure stranger stories have happened.

try playing them the 'Batman' Album - or you could even throw in a few tracks from '3121' or 'Musicology' or even some from the 'Rave 2000' album... Although - actually making them sit down and watch him usually does the trick for me - My Fiance used to hate Prince until he met me - he loves him now due to the fact I made him sit down and watch all his DVDs... This is generally a waste of time.
You will find that Prince is so much an acquired taste that, on top of everything, this taste must be acquired entirely on your own, in the privacy of your own home, if not room. There is a stigma in liking an high-heeled man who dresses frilly and sings high. Also, a big chunk of his work is truly so-so, with a very high cheese quotient for some periods, so that a person wishing to learn more about Prince can stumble upon some truly mediocre material and easily miss the brilliance of other periods. Some people know I'm a Prince fan at work, and from time to time they will come over and say they just read some Prince news. I always give them a smile and a shrug -- "That's Prince for you" == and change the topic. Years from now, when the proper box sets finally arrive and every music critic hail him again as a visionary, I know some people will take notice and feel a bit dumb for missing what was plain to hear. Then I'll talk about Prince.

If you want to "change them" then you're not a very good friend. DOn't believe the point scale myth, Prince doesn't pay per new fan. News: Prince pulls his head out his ass in the last moment.
Bad News: Prince wasted too much quality time doing so. You have those internalized issues because you want to, you like to, stop.

Just a thought: I got a friend to come over with "Sometimes it Snows in April". Give it a try.

Then I'll talk about Prince. That is the absolute truth about Prince and my take with P. I made up my mind recently not to try and "convert" anyone to the man because in the end, the music is for me and I'm not going through someone saying "I don't like it" or "I like the older music more" if the person was an old fan again. If someone is interested in hearing what I have, then I'll play something for them but in the end, people like what they like and I don't care to share what I have with anyone else unless they are a fan already and they have something I don't have and vice versa. I'm not a fan of "old Prince". I'm not a fan of "new Prince". I'm just a fan of Prince. Simple as that

I wouldn't waste my time trying to convert anyone. I went to 2 of the Musicology shows by myself because I didn't feel like asking anyone if they wanted to go with me. After I attended the shows, I told my sister about them and she asked me why I didn't ask her because she would have liked to go. A third show was added later in the summer. My sister and her sister-in-law went with me. They had a good time, but they are not the kind of people that get fammy about any one artist, so they'll never become a Prince geek like me. They like some of the hits and that's about it.
