Oh HE still matters. Just because his name is not out there in the mainstream, doesn't mean He is not doing anything. Jesse has contributed to several movies (other than Pretty in Pink and The Breakfast Club) He has been playing with folks like Tom somebody or other from Cameo and others and is working on his new album and tour. Many. many guitarists respect the gift of JESSE. cool

U mean Tomi Jenkins (backup singer for Cameo). Jesse plays guitar on his new album. He plays all the instruments all the songs "Come Correct" and "Everythang".Jesse also plays guitar on "Where's your head At?"

there is one thing which makes prince better guitaR PLayer then jesse.
prince have better ear.

princes choice of notes while he do a solo on guitar is more exotic, more weird .
jesse is straight hard rock player.

prince plays like santana on steroids buit he can emulate hendrix when he want to(witness for the prossecution).

and the less important thing prince have at least one guitar solo that is praised in the guitar world community PURPLE RAIN.

JESSE HAVE GREAT SOLOS IN HIS SONGS but his solos are more standard pentatonic oriented solos.
prince solos have better structure, more melodic, more emotional.

I definitely agree with you that P has better structure. He carefully and almost perfectly works out the timing and space of his solos yet they still seem to flow so emotional. A good example of this is the solo from the blues medley from the Rave DVD. The solo is clean and he makes good use of the time. The RRHF also proves this point and many others in his favor. His ear is better than most musicians on any instrument though that's one of the things that make him Prince his keen sense of harmonies and melodies. I'm not saying Jesse is better, but I think he deserves respect cause he can play a mean guitar.

Someone mentioned Jesse writing Jungle Love for The Time.
Have you really "listened" to Jesse's solo in that song, it sounds fantastic, sweet, beautifully created for the space in that song, but..... it's like a musician playing "When the Saints Go Marching In" in whole notes compared to what Prince can do.

The solo was really pleasing to the ears but lacked complexity.

Know what I mean?

I remember his earlier albums "Every Shade of Love" and the first one with "I Wanna Be Your Man", basically they sounded like Prince, I lost interest after that. Just like I did with Ready For The World after hearing "Oh Shiela"

I actually had the pleasure of Jesse sitting in with my band a few weeks ago in LA. I am a guitar player and Prince is my main man of inspiration but let me tell you guys how Jesse killed it. I grew up listening to Jesse and even I was blown away by his playing that night. He did mostly blues stuff and his solos were incredible. I don't think you can compare the 2 as far as I'm concerned. I do think this, just like Prince, you have to see him live in order to really know what he can do. The funny thing about that night was, we were donig 777-9311 and we brought him up on stage and he asked my to show him how to play the riff. I thought that was awesome.
I did get to hang out with him and I can tell you that he is mad cool. He is also working on some really big stuff right now, so get ready. Jesse's coming back in a big way...

When comparing musicians, it is probably more of a personal preference. There is no real way (like points or wins, etc..) to "measure" a musician.

I had read interviews from people in Prince's camp that said that Jesse was the only Guitar player Prince was afraid of. To the point of severely editing some of Jesse's solos on some Time songs. Is it true or not????? I don't know.

With that said, I think they are both outstanding guitarists. I have not seen Jesse play live enough to form a real opinion of who (in my opinion) is the "better" guitarist.

I just prefer to sit back and enjoy both!

As I stated before in one of thebanishedone's earlier princevsanotherguitarist posts - it's all good, 'cause I dig guitar talk - there are certain absolutes when it comes to musical skills. Steve Vai and Joe Satriani unquestionably possess more technical skill than a LOT of musicians, including Prince. (regardless of the fact that P is an "all-around musician, not just a guitarist"). Those are technical absolutes. However, the personal enjoyment of music is purely subjective. It's apples and oranges. Your Black-Eyed Peas record is my I-gotta-change-the-station song. In a purely pleasing to the ears sense, it's personal taste. As a guitar player myself, I love cats like Vai and Satriani, but my personal faves are Prince, Eric Gales, Jesse Johnson and Ernie Isley, cats more in the funk-rock vein. They touch me in a different way.

As a boxing fan, I often make this analogy. Floyd Mayweather is largely considered to be the most talented, skills-wise boxer in the world right now. Arturo Gatti (whom he starched last year) has NOWHERE near the skills Floyd has, but he's more beloved and attracts a bigger audience. The skill difference is an absolute, but the personal preference is a matter of intangibles. This applies to many areas of life...

I have all of Jesse's albums and love the guy's music.
I also think that he is the most underrated Black guitar players ever.

BUT .....

Prince is one of the greatest guitar players of all time and the most underrated gutiar player in human history.

It makes me mad as Hell to see all of these so called gutiar players get props and never see Prince mentioned.

IMO the only people who deserved to be ranked ahead of the man are Hendrix,Page, Clampton,Diddley, and Santanna.

Man, this topic has been beaten to death. Whatever a person's opinion is just that, their opinion. Both brothers smoke on axe, that's all that matters. The only reason I posted was to respond to 2freaky; What's up player? Uh, I've seen Jesse LIVE in concert. 3 times to be exact. Once when The Time and Zapp opened on the Controversy tour in Santa Monica. Again on the 1999 tour in Long Beach and once more in the early 90's at The Troubadour on Jesse's own solo tour. Each time, Jesse TURNED IT OUT. Especially on his own tour. The man smokes. I've stated on here several times about this very topic, especially over in Non Music, that as a lead guitarist, Jesse's and P's styles are vastly different. Both men are obviously heavily influenced by Hendrix. But the way they showcase their influence are different. It all comes down to who u prefer. Period. Jordon or Magic. Both were brilliant, but both were different.

Very cool. I recorded with Morris and Andre back in 95 for a song by Morris called "Skirt". I recorded a lead guitar solo. While I was there, we talked about a variety of things, all night damn near. Anyways, the topic of P and Jesse and how they had major run-ins with each other while Jesse was in The Time. Anyway, Andre favored P's playing while Morris favored Jesse's. No big surprise there although Andre thought Jesse was excellent.
