Wow. I thought I was the only 1 who tripped on this cut. It was 1982. I was a kid. I was already playing guitar, bass, percussion, keys, and programming drum machines. I had already discovered Sly, James Brown, Parliament, Hendrix, Stevie Wonder, and a boatload of traditional Nigerian music, straight ahead jazz, bebop, harmolodic jazz, and other eclectic funk, like Defunkt. My boy Russ came over 2 house with the newly released 1999 album, and said I had 2 check it out. I was only vaguely familiar with his work previous 2 this album. I was like OK... he lent me the album, and I WORE THAT MUTHA OUT. "Automatic" and "Lady Cab Driver" got ultra-heavy rotation, alond with "D.M.S.R."... I went out and, little by little, got every album previous to '1999', and everything released after that... 12"s... the whole 9 yards. Out of the previous stuff, I couldn't stop playing "Controversy" and "Let's Work" from, of course, 'Controversy'. Even though my funk guitar playing was already tight at that point, it got a whole lot tighter when I heard Prince swingin' it... locked in, of course. Easy. G. You were one great kid.

For me, it was the song 'Gold' sometime in 1997, I think. TGE was my first album, then Purple Rain...I guess. I really don't remember.

It wasn't always easy, though. I kind of isolated myself with music. I'm not the only 1 though... So funny... of all the threads on this site, this 1 has provoked the most thought, and in a good way.
