Raspberry Beret - seeing the video on a cable music channel back in '85 was it for me.

I didn't have a video so had to record it onto a tape recorder held to the TV speaker. I remember getting up early the next morning like an addict, to play it back. Them were the days!!

First time I got HOOKED to PRINCE.I saw him on American Bandstand in 1979.I thought he was hot w/that big hair and that leather jacket.I just love the beat of the music.It was better than that KISS my brother was playing.

The DirtyMind song and video solidified my Prince devotion for life. I was about 10 and I was watching Video Soul on BET and I saw this skinny guy dancing in black briefs and a trench coat inside what appeared to be a church!!!!! I thought to myself, who is this gay guy and who does he think he is. Then as I kept watching, I realized I had never ever heard music like this before and I realized that he wasnt gay. I realized that he was the most coolest, rebelious singer I ever seen. I was hooked 4 life.

1999 In the 6th grade my teacher asked what are you listening too?
"Prince 1999" I replied. "Do you're parents know? Give me that tape!" She replied I was hooked already by then. Went straight to the store after school to buy another one.

Controversy...Soft and Wet always made my ears perk up because of it's unusual timing, hooks brightly painted even for those funky 70's. But Controversy was the hook with the worm.

It was 1982. I was a kid. I was already playing guitar, bass, percussion, keys, and programming drum machines. I had already discovered Sly, James Brown, Parliament, Hendrix, Stevie Wonder, and a boatload of traditional Nigerian music, straight ahead jazz, bebop, harmolodic jazz, and other eclectic funk, like Defunkt.

My boy Russ came over 2 house with the newly released 1999 album, and said I had 2 check it out. I was only vaguely familiar with his work previous 2 this album. I was like OK... he lent me the album, and I WORE THAT MUTHA OUT.

"Automatic" and "Lady Cab Driver" got ultra-heavy rotation, alond with "D.M.S.R."... I went out and, little by little, got every album previous to '1999', and everything released after that... 12"s... the whole 9 yards. Out of the previous stuff, I couldn't stop playing "Controversy" and "Let's Work" from, of course, 'Controversy'.

Even though my funk guitar playing was already tight at that point, it got a whole lot tighter when I heard Prince swingin' it... locked in, of course.

When Doves Cry got me onto Prince in a big way, but the 12" of Let's Go Crazy and the re-issue of 1999 (in the UK) later in the year cemented the addiction!!!!
