I f you were a sound engineer & you were selected to remaster....

Prince's back catalogue, which album would you start with -- would you include extras?

I would start with purple rain with the computer blue hallway speech, long beautiful ones...

after that I would deliver my copy of parade (which was worked on already)

Remastering? You mean destroying the original version of a record, like what the Alicia keys playing girl did. The only remastering that you would do to an original record is adding scratches.

Controversy. Great album that needs a facelift to be able to play in the clubs. Ever make a mix tape of songs off different cds and they all have different levels and remind you of that commercial that suddenly comes in at a volume that is 10 decibels higher than other commercials?

Controversy needs more.

The entire first decade of his output would be remastered (For You thru Lovesexy). Extras? Yes. Which songs specifically?...

It would be all the ORIGINAL album artwork,

All the original liner notes,

All the lyrics printed with each album,

At least a couple of B-sides added for each album,

At least one outtake from the original album session,

All instrumentalists would be credited for each song they played on,

All songwriting co-credits listed,

And new retrospective liner notes by someone like Nelson George for at least a few of the 10 albums. I'd have to think about who else could do it for the others.

And then, it might be time to work on a box set...what a monster that would be...

Well that's certainly easy enough to fix.

Take the songs you are including on the album and run them through a program like Sound Forge XP and normalize the RMS on all the songs. Your cd will then be completely uniform.

I would not reccomend the normalize feature on programs like Easy CD Creator because they only normalize the peak value.

You don't want much, do you? wink

But I agree. He should do like Bowie and add alternate versions of album songs and outtakes from the period the album was recorded.

Who if not Nelson George? Hmmm?

Besides, I said for a few albums. It wouldn't be the entire remastered output. One person writing retrospective liners for 10 remastered discs isn't conducive to this project.

Oh, and my remasters would be organic as possible. Nothing would sound plastic, nothing would be muddy, everything would have resonance! Dammit!

You have to include everything from Purple Rain onwards in a seperate box. Wouldn't that be great with all the extras from the 80's included. music

'Prince' would be the 1st one for me.
The CD that's out now has a totally screwed up version of "Still Waiting". The very beginning of the intro is clipped off & the instrumental portion that follows (before the 1st verse) is only half of what it was on the original album.
Very sloppy transfer to CD on Warner Bros' part.

If I were to compile it, it wouldn't just start with Purple Rain. It would be comprehensive and definitive. Not like the 4 cd box set for Stevie Wonder where nothing extra is included, and only the most popular songs are featured.

again what she said...lol..

But I would also suggest:

- perhabs some extra photo's/artwork, or reflections of Prince himself about creating these records.

- besides a box set consisting of 10 cd's, he should release them all seperately or in two box sets.
Like:

For you + Prince
Dirtymind + Controversy
1999 + Purple Rain
Around the world in a day + Parade
Sign of the times
Black Album + Lovesexy
You are not my "friend" because you threaten my security.
