In the latest issue of Blender (www.blender.com) with eminem on the cover, Sandra Bernhard gives her ten favorite records on page 131. Among the list is Purple rain - here's the relevant quote:

"At the time of Purple Rain, I thought that there was no more remarkable artist than Prince - once again, another person who's blown it for me. Purple Rain captured the essence of his energy. I watch it over and over. He was amazing with that weird sexual ambiguity and the music is incredible'.

I know exactly the comment to which you're referring, as it's on her "I'm Still Here, Dammit" CD and I was lucky enough to see her perform this show live...MY interpretation of the Mariah comment was that she (Mariah) had made a conscious decision to make herself look all hootchie and ghetto in an attempt to sell her records to a certain demographic; Sandra was simply saying that she thought it was an absurd move. It's just her opinion. She used a strong word. But she used it in a context that was NOT, in my opinion anyway, racist.

Now, if you think Sandra's a racist just for using the word "Nigger", then John Lennon was a racist for "Woman Is The Nigger Of The World" and Patti Smith was a racist for "Rock 'n' Roll Nigger". But if you bother to interpret the WHY behind their use of the word, you might be surprised.

OH - and, needless to say, I LOVE Sandra. I caught her latest tour a couple of months ago, and she ended the show once again with Little Red Corvette! Too cool!

Sandra Bernhardt is really Cool. I dig her. In her show and movie Without You I AM Nothing she did a Striptease to Little Red Corvette. That whole show was really good. I always catch her off Broadway. I dig her style and her act. Sandra's Great! I also liked her show on USA about the Weird Cinema movies. Really Cool!

Sandra was commenting on the fact that Mariah started her career singing *pop* music and never once referenced her street creed...then out of know where Mariah busts out Ms. Ghetto Superstar. Sandra was only commenting on the hypocracy...Now, I must admit that I dislike the use of the N word...but, you cant call Sandra racist when she follows her statements about Mariah by praising the *TRUE* SISTAs...Missy Elliot, Lil Kim OVA here...Mary J Blidge and En Vouge (missing one)...and others... these girls act like who they are...while Mariah, lil miss suburb perpetrates...
