Missed your little brat-ball post.

The clip is good for what it is, but it's India doing America, & over 3 decades ago, at that. That's why the women look like Barbara Eden
What would be Indian about it if he did it? But I get why you like it.

Bollywood is a crock of shite and is a frank embarassment to a country with an otherwise rich and varied cultural history!

Apart from Pran that is.

Woman!

What? That clip is from 1972.
It's India, doing America. Other than the people in it, it has little Indian in it. The point was that if he's going to do Bollywood, do something more Indian. Not India doing America.

Cooooorny disbelief

That really made me feel sick to my stomach. Anything OVER THE TOP is tacky, and Prince is over the top all by himself, he doesn't need to add this madness on top of his bullshit.

Did you watch the clip that 2the9s posted? You think that's over the top?

First you have to consider a culture that needs movies like this. It's no different than what America did after the depression. For many it's the only escape they find in a day. But even in that context, I don't find it over the top at all. Especially since it has many traditional elements in it...from the dance, which they do well, to the music. But I guess over-the-top is a personal call.

Exactly, though in many cases the music in the Bollywood productions is better.

I love those dances... sure they lend themselves to parody, but I think the amount and quality of some of these parodies is a sure sign of the industry's success.

I'm going to make my daughter Lucy take Bollywood dance classes when she is old enough!

When you say take Bollywood dance, it's almost like when people say "I take hip-hop". Let her take traditional dance. Every region has it's dance. The more you look into it the more you will appreciate the intricacies of each.

If it's just for fun, "Bollywood dance" is fine, but she will not learn correctly because the women will do even the male part which you will not find in the traditional dance. In India they would laugh at that.

The funny thing is what some may say lends itself to parody is India having fun with America. The more traditional dance is taken very seriously.

I like the hybrid traditional/pop that's in the clip you selected as well as the more classical. Same for the music. So (back to the thread) if he did something along any of those lines it would be pretty cool.

What makes you think I even dig the MGM musical movies during the depression era/after it? shrug

My thing is, if I want to see a BIG broadway production,,,I'll go see it. But bonafide musical movies ain't really the right cream on my coffee.

The ONLY musical movie I ever owned/dug and not even that much for that matter is Dorothy Dandridge's Carmen Jones, but even that I'd rather see on a broadway production.

But I understand where you're coming from even though we ain't on the same boat.

Didn't say I was a big MGM fan either (not of the movies you mention)...I'm not. The statement was more about understanding the mindset of a time/culture.

Anyway, the thread is "Prince should do a Bollywood album"...and it's kind of funny. Of course he shouldn't, but the formula of classical Indian music and whatever he brings to it would be interesting.

Did we all know that Mayte actually starred in a Bollywood movie? I saw her in a magazine (India Today)...the movie name i forgot....should i find out?

Is this not a good enough reason for Prince to play Bollywood? and get Mayte back when u're on the way...she is still beautifull...www.mayte.com

But if that is not what u want..check out Aiswarya Rai..she could be a good runner up...wink

I always found it interesting how it's so accepted that everyone (mainly women) has the same singing voice. In the older films, Lata and Asha (2 sisters) had the monopoly on this gig. I don't know the numbers but they did the soundtrack on nearly every film.

Milli Vanilli should have moved to India.

i had a punjabi girlfriend for two and a half years, who was a prince fan, and one time we came up with a routine based on the sketch from the indian-british tv show goodness gracious me with the guy who claims everything good is originally indian (played by sanjeev bhaskar).

prince is clearly indian!
workaholic....indian!
brown skin but puts on makeup to look lighter....indian!
runs inefficient call centers....indian!
arranges marriage many years in advance when bride is still virtually a child...indian!
