Prince and The Revolution Era

Definitely the best era of Prince material! I loved the psychodelic sounds he used. His songs had plenty of emotion. How can you ever create better masterpieces like Darling Nikki and the Beautiful Ones. These are Two Classics that are often overlooked. Of Course Purple Rain and When Doves Cry are great but we have all heard them a million times.

My question was Prince just more creative during this period?

Was he experiencing alot of pain in his life at this time which brought out his emotions and creative side?

Or Did Wendy & Lisa play a large role in his creativity at the time?

If Wendy & Lisa were so creative, How come their music that they have released since the break up of the Revolution has been Shit Music?

+++I don't think this is his best era. Actually I don't think he has a best era. Too much music and many different styles that appeal to different folks. It's way too subjective. I think way too much focus is still on this era due to the amount of hit he had at that time. But the reality is this was the time he was popular. WHen you are popular, you are bound to have a hit. Raspberry Beret and Pop Life being two good examples. Great songs, but sub par to a lot of his work before AND after. I also think that all of the songs from PR except for Computer Blue are not overlooked classics. All of the songs are very popular from that album.

My question was Prince just more creative during this period?

+++Good question. I think he was very very prolific between 1982 - 1994 or so. The man did not stop making music. I think the type of music during this period was consisted of some of the most challenging pieces of music during his career. I think he has been creative throughout his career, though in the last 5 years or so, the music has slowed down or so it would seem. But considering that he is 48, I'd say it's a true assessmnet that he is not banging them out every other day.

Was he experiencing alot of pain in his life at this time which brought out his emotions and creative side?

+++other than his break up with Suzannah, I don't know of any sorrow or pain he went through. I am sure it was hard working with W&L after that. I don't think it affected his output or creativity other than maybe a song or two emerged regarding that.

Or Did Wendy & Lisa play a large role in his creativity at the time?

+++No. Not as large as many would like to believe. I think they influenced him and challenged him and turned him onto things he hadn't listened to before. But he created the songs with really no substantial input from them...i.e he did not create the songs with them. He would create the songs and then play them for W&L who would give input on what they heard. That's my take on it all.

If Wendy & Lisa were so creative, How come their music that they have released since the break up of the Revolution has been Shit Music?

+++BLASPHEMY!!! lol Each to his own. But it is NOT so NOT shit music. In fact, when you listen to it, one can hear some of the influence they had. Their 3rd album was critically acclaimed, and I would even say that they were one of the first (or inspired) the girl rock bands we hear today. They have worked with Seal, Neil FInn, SHeryl Crow and have won awards for their score work on TV. If thier music was shit, we would NOT be discussing them 20 years after the fact.

Are we talking "good" or are we talking "I like it"? Personally, W&L's music is not generally my cup of tea, but I wouldn't say they aren't great musicians.

i don't think they're great songwriters, but i do think they're great musicians who come up with some very unique, pleasing sounds.

Yeah considering the songs they write are of similar subject matter...this was the case for 2 of thier albums.

Definitely not his greatest moment. but some of his best material was produced during the Revolution era and Purple Rain, Around The World, and Parade were just unique! But the NPG band was more diverse...

While I enjoy his Revolution Era work, I do think his music lost its edge and funkiness post Purple Rain. The funk sounds that came back into the post-Rev. albums were sorely missed during albums like ATWIAD and Parade. Parade did have its moments of funkiness, but it was mainly when Prince was doing most of the instrumentation himself that I enjoyed the songs the most. Don't get me wrong I LOVE Parade and enjoy parts of ATWIAD, but the material that Prince released on B-sides during the ATWIAD era was FAR superior to the album tracks. The B-side material had more of his sound, an edge and didn't sound as much like a Beatles-esque retread.

Music is subjective. What one person may think sounds good, another may think it sounds terrible. In other words, there is no definitive answer to your questions regarding Prince's creativity in the 80's as compared to any other period in his career.
