You're the only one smile

Actually, it's inevitable that some "cool" folks will say Prince most celebrated masterpiece is "overrated"... Just like Citizen Kane was voted both best and worst scenario a while back...

That's always the way things go. I like almost everything on SOTT, (album & Film), But I do not think it is his "best" work within his catalogue. This might sound strange, but don't you think Prince's best work is hidden somewhere in the vault at Paisley Park. Personally, I honestly think his best is yet to come.

As much as I love the studio version of this track, this particular live version of the song is awesome. Prince really gives an engaging vocal performance(sort of had that gospel feel to it).

Just you wait for the opening up of The Vault...
Remember, the album version is edited...
A longer version must excist...
Would Boni and Sheila be on that, I wonder...

On the studio version didn't Wendy play guitar?

This is what a good topic on prince.org is supposed to look like. How refreshing...

"I'm gonna do ya'! I'm gonna do ya! Do ya'! Do ya'! Do ya'! Do ya'! Do ya'! Do yaaaooowwww'!"

Drops the mike and staggers with guitar on his back...then it just gets Funkier! Wooo! Brings back the chills!

I love that part, he's just in some other zone man! And I love how Dr. Fink is just playing the tamborine and he looks so out of place BUT in the right place! Super funky white dude! ANd prince's outfit is just awesome! I loved the heart on the back and his hat, too funky. A classic performance.

Sing "O"The Times movie is the one I recommend to anyone I come across who has a slight interest in Prince or say he sucks...usually they shut up. No one in pop has yet to match that performance and energy and Funk and creativity!

I think you're referring to the album...I hope you are. I think you don't get it...maybe it's your age. Current stuff just doesn't have that mystery that people who grew up with Sign"O"The TImes era Prince had.

I recommend, really, just finding a VINYL version and playing and just sit at a sofa and read the lyrics...then see the videos, then get some unreleased music from that period (86-87), 12' singles with the b-sides...sprinkle some Madhouse, then watch the concert movie with full steroe speakers, find yourself a copy of the Sign"O"The Times Tour Program...THEN turn on MTV after all that and look at the silly rappers and lame prefabricated "pop" stars and tell me it's still "overrated"...

Right! I meant to call Brother915 on a prime example of a perfect Prince.org topic and thread too!

The title is clear so you know what you're getiing into, Brother915 even capitalized all the words, not lazy! He expressed his feelings for the performance and song, he reminiscenced about his experiences and called out some cool details.

not forgetting "hot thing", especially p's organ intro to it; and the freeze frame when he throws his arms behind and his hips out whilst the music stamps on.. fantastic. and how about when p slides across the stage to whip cat's skirt off (with his *teeth*?! can that really be true, or is it false memory?)

and the guitar solo on ICNTTPOYM. how about when p hits that first note, his arm windmilling, and then just lets the arm *hang* there. it's so very very very cool.

egad, how about p on drums in "beautiful night", egad egad egad. and didn't they play the horn lick from "rock hard in a funky place" during that version? it's been too long since i saw this film. but what a what a what a what a GREAT movie it is. it's the best, hands down, it's the best.

That organ solo on Hot Thing is definitely one of the funkiest Prince moments ever! YOu can smell that shit!

I agree with this, the SOTT movie is the perfect documentation of his genius. I'd refer someone to this movie before any one of his albums, because after seeing this movie, they will run to their nearest record store to start their collection of his music.

Here we go again...Sign of the Times debate...oh well, my 2 cents:

Sign of the Times is a great, great CD. Heck, even one of his best, but is it his best? That is subjective of course, so there is no right or wrong answer. Only the opinion of the observer can be noted. Now, I've been listening to Prince on a regular basis since Dirty Mind as a youngster. Of course, I had to get For You and Prince and catchup if you will. But I digress...let me say that LoveSexy is his most best work TO ME.
