Prince's Performance Of Forever In My Life On SOTT Concert Movie

This is one of my favorite performances from the SOTT movie. I like the part when Cat turns and see that her love interest has a couple of women with him. Meanwhile, Prince puts on a stellar vocal performance, As much as I love the studio version of this track, this particular live version of the song is awesome. Prince really gives an engaging vocal performance(sort of had that gospel feel to it). Particularly when Sheila, Boni, Cat and rest of the crew joins LIL MAN on stage and they're singing the "all right"part while The Little One is on lead vocal. You can tell by looking at them on stage that they're not so much afraid of him as they're just in awe(maybe because he's the one paying them as well...LOL). Sort of how the Bulls players used to marvel at Jordan's gracefulness in a crunch time situation down the stretch.

I like the way he plays with the phrase "IN MY LIFE" after the second verse. Then what really kills me is when he says "back off the mike chiiren"...LOL)And of course the chicken scratch riff he was playing on his acoustic was kind of funky too. The performance of this song is a prime example of how creative he can be. How he can breath new life into his songs and make them something different.

I remember watching this on the big screen in the movie theaters back in 87'. I remember me and friends were waiting for him to perform "Housequake". This song should have been a hit single with a tight video. So we were really waiting on that one. When he launched into it, the theater was rocking. I remember watching him slide on his back across the stage then goes rolls over into split mode then comes back up and then spins around. I remember thinking what incredible energy this man displays.

I also enjoyed his guitar solo of "I Could Never Take The Place Of Your Man".

I remember seeing the 'Sign O' The Times' concert film in the theatre.I was rockin' in my seat the whole time! That movie is incredible, and it shows Prince at the peak of his powers. He had the best band of his career, the strongest album of his career, and a kickass live show that was absolutely amazing!! When I left the theatre,I was thinking "All he has to do is bring this tour to the U.S. and he will be fine"smile

LOVE this version!

Love it!

This is one of the reasons people go after live boots, cuz as cool as Prince is in the studio, his stuff is 200 percent better live.

You could hate a cd or song, but when he comes to your town touring with it, you are like "DAMN"

All I have to say is I am glad I found this version on CD.

Slow Love, Forever in My Life & If I was your Girlfriend kick major booty in this film/cd
Silence Speaks A Thousand Words.

not forgetting "hot thing", especially p's organ intro to it; and the freeze frame when he throws his arms behind and his hips out whilst the music stamps on.. fantastic. and how about when p slides across the stage to whip cat's skirt off (with his *teeth*?! can that really be true, or is it false memory?)

and the guitar solo on ICNTTPOYM. how about when p hits that first note, his arm windmilling, and then just lets the arm *hang* there. it's so very very very cool.

egad, how about p on drums in "beautiful night", egad egad egad. and didn't they play the horn lick from "rock hard in a funky place" during that version? it's been too long since i saw this film. but what a what a what a what a GREAT movie it is. it's the best, hands down, it's the best.

Forever in my life is absolutely the song of my wife and me! We used the first lines in our wedding invitation, and played it during the ceremony..

"There comes a time in every man's life..."

Hate to cut off your enthusiasm, but the SOTT concert movie isn't live at all. It was recorded in a studio see...

This is how it goes, you get high - somebody will bring you down. wink

Superb version of the song. I totally agree! However don't 4get Brother915 that on this SOTT movie the vocals are actually studio vocals, or at least treated. It wasn't live.

You know,I read in the "DMSR" book how most of the performances were actually filmed at Paisley Park.Prince had his Rotterdam concerts taped, but when he viewed the footage, there was a problem and he couldn't use most of it.

So,he got back to Paisley and "re-enacted" the live performances, basically lip-syncing to his own live recordings! What do you guys think?

The great thing at a few of the Holland shows (perhaps all, but I wasn't there every night) was that almost everybody on the stands light their cigarette lighter at the same time on the 2 and 4 (or 1 and 3). It was a great sight.

Well, it was officially tagged a "concert movie", not "live footage of a prince concert". So I don't have a problem with that. Better sound quality anyway and in a sense it offered a different version of the SOTT album. So we in fact, got two great releases of the same thing leaving us wonder which one was even better than the other.

but a few new live concerts should b 4 sale. there is nothing better than being able 2 pop in the man at anytime into the vcr. this was by far one of his best concerts recorded. why wont he release more? thats a million dollar question, im sure as hell they would sell.

My wife and I had it played at our wedding. The first song as we entered the reception.

We wanted it to be played at our ceremony, but the church's musical director was a dick and would not allow it.

just reading ur recounts of the FUNK, gets me HIGH!
Prince is such an enigma, eye think HE is the only person who can't c it!

as young as Prince was, and IS, he has always had the wisdom and BLUESY FUNK of an Old School Player!
especially n his actions and speech...

the 1rst time eye heard Prince actually talk...not scripted, blew my mind!
He could have turned whiter than Michael Jackson, but eye could hear the Ebony of his words!
even his voice is 2 Funky!

when ever eye put on SOTT video movie...eye play it at least 3x's straight thru...and then repeat FIML at least 7x's alone...then high, eye drift off 2 sleep!

playing it n a half hour!

Shit! That performance was so great. We were in Florida and we were singing along with the songs and actually dancing in the Theater I kid you not! My God, when I saw it again at the Celebration I couldn't believe it was such a long time ago, because Prince still looked as Young and as Gorgeous as back then. Whew, the man always makes me feel like I am in Heaven. What a Mindblowing Performance. It gets me Wet. AAH!

Same here but after the wedding march

Word... I remember was him doing a shimmy along on his back and then popping up with the splits...I gotta buy this.

P.S. the dancing in this made MJ seem like he wasnt that hot of a dancer...since he was in his bloated Elvis stage when this was released.

What a shame! BTW, we also used fragments of 'The One' and 'Love they will be done', while 'Venus de Milo' was played when leaving the church.

I hope you had the same good feeling that day like we did (and still do!).

I think I saw the "SOTT" film four times at the theater when it was released. Forever In My Life is great, but my favorites are I Could Never Take The Place Of Your Man (with that guitar solo) and The Cross...definitely some CLASSIC Prince performances.

For those who don't know, there's about 4 hours of unreleased video footage from the movie shoot that's been circulating for years. As noted earlier, what you see in the film is mostly from Paisley Park, not Europe. It doesn't bother me at all though. But in the video, he does a take or two of each song and there are some funny moments when he screws up.

I agree that the late 80s was Prince as the height of his powers. That's when he did The SOTT album,Lovesexy, the Black Album, and the original Crystal Ball and Camille tracks that didn't make it on SOTT. What a collection of amazing music that he produced during these years.

Actually, it's inevitable that some "cool" folks will say Prince most celebrated masterpiece is "overrated"... Just like Citizen Kane was voted both best and worst scenario a while back...

Just you wait for the opening up of The Vault...
Remember, the album version is edited...
A longer version must excist...
Would Boni and Sheila be on that, I wonder...
