Does Prince read music?? Does Prince read music or does he play by ear??

some think he doesn't read music. It is obvious he does "play by ear" and is not trained in "musical theory", I do believe he can read sheet music, but that playing by ear is how he works best. If course, this is just my opinion, based on comments to me from people he has worked with.

Michael B. said that Prince didn't read music as far as he knew. Check out the Associated Artists forum. perfection is a fallacy of the imagination...

I agree. I've heard people say he can't read, but I have a hard time believing it. How could he have been in high school band without knowing how to read music? I guess he could have just picked up what the people around him were doing, but they would have taught him to read in band anyway. Even if he didn't learn in high school, I would think that a man who is so musical would learn eventually, and pick it up very quickly. Wanna hear me sing? www.ChampagneHoneybee.com

I was in band for two years. They taught us how to read music, but I had a hard time learning the chords. So maybe Prince didn't learn it either. Or it just may be that Prince is just musically inclined.

He said at a rehersal in 2002 that he couldn't read sheet music, and that was why he had Najee in the band. Yet Prince had a book of something in front of him as he was sitting at the keyboard, maybe it was just lyrics and not notes.

That's just so weird to me. I guess it's because I learned to read music when I was 6, and all of my musician friends knew how to as well. I can't imagine someone like Prince never learning how. Oh well, I guess that's why they call him gifted. Wanna hear me sing? www.ChampagneHoneybee.com

Isn't prince reading his fathers sheet music in Purple Rain? And playing with notes on his computer screen in the beginning of Graffiti Bridge?

Prince said he couldn't read music. He said it in an interivew on an Austrailian show.

you also have to take into considerations the context of the statement "cant read sheet music". I don't consider myself being able to "read music" because I can't "sight read". I know "how" to read the music, I can look at the lines and determine what keys are being played, but I can't just sit down with a sheet of music and play it through whilst following along...I go through, slowly reading the music, kinda get a feel for the notes, then go back and practice learning it more by ear and memorization of some of the notes I read.

I can't believe I'm saying this but haven't we learned over the years that Prince says a lot of things that aren't necessarily the whole truth just simply to add intrigue to his mystique?

HMM? that is easy, it is all in the ear.....I know lots of musicians who can create music, but can't read it , Prince's songbooks aren't written by him anyways....they are interpreted by others in listening to his music..hence why the songs are sometimes off

guess prince reads guitar tabs and chords like the way
C-Am-G-F what are the chords of purple rain. after the years he may have learned to write down some chords in the way some jazzer or classics do ? Normally those people have music teachers or they study music. Prince was self tought and didnt study. By the way you dont need notes eaven you play jazz. You only need to know what scale to play ovber some chords and i guess Prince knows what he#s playin ! but it doesnt matter if he does. there are a couple of good musicians who cannot read notes. What they are playin is what they have in mind. or did you ever see J.Hendrix, Steve Ray Vaughan BB King or Eric Clapton read their songs up from a letter ? guess not... greats by wickedsmith www.rockfunk.de

No but Hendrix said he wanted to be able to read and write music so he could compose epic numbers using string sections and hiring other musicians to play what he wanted on his records. he mentioned wanting to go to music school! It helps in certain cases; especially if your using string sections and asking experienced musicians to play; if you could write it down or interprete it i guess that could only help? www.rockfunk.de

Prince can read. News: Prince pulls his head out his ass in the last moment.
Bad News: Prince wasted too much quality time doing so. You have those internalized issues because you want to, you like to, stop.

I know you CAN, but I was talking about literally writing a song and referring to the acutally written music seen in Graffiti Bridge. If he can't read music (or wants us to think he can't) how do you explain that hand-written sheet music? He couldn't have written that without being able to read it.
