dissapointment of Purple Rain dvd

mad wat a dissapointing idea, The 20th anniverssary dvd of Purple Rain came out 2 years ago and when i went 2 buy it, i was expecting deleted scenes. Well got home, NO DELETED SCENES, i was pissed. Where in the hell is the barnyard scene, and the fight scene he had with Jellybean. The only good i got out of this released was the Promo videos. So maybe it will b included on the 30th anniversary edition. biggrin

was anyonelse dissapointed?

since there was nothing on the dvd case about deleted scenes being included, how mad can you be? those scenes will show up about the same time the color version of UTCM shows up--never. neutral

I bought it several months ago. I've not watched it yet, but I've started watching it a couple of times. I've seen stuff that wasn't there before. eek Plus it seems to be clearer and sharper. Documentary was intresting. It was worth the reduced price I paid and more.

I was also upset that the scenes were not included...
But though most of the movie is a lot sharper (both picture and music wise)...there are two very noticable problems...

- The picture turns very poor during the parents bust-in when The Kid is blasting Purple Rain over their arguing.
- The sounds during the guitar solo of Purple Rain suddenly turns to a much less sharp quality which is easily noticable and distracting.

It's a shame but honestly I had a feeling that that would happen due to the fact past rivalry with WB and the fact that Prince is not a big fan of publishing outtakes. I think that the film should have been left alon with the digital and audio remastering. The second dvd with brings up the price of the film was a complete waste. I assure you if the deleted scenes were included the sales would have shot through the roof. I read the script already and it's a million times better than the finished product. Actaully that's the big draw of dvds as a whole. This product got exactly what it deserved.

Easter Eggs, for those that might not be in the know, are menu options that can't be accessed through the menu directory of most if not all Over the counter DVD players. The easiest way to find the Easter Eggs if they truly exist is to load the DVD into a computer's DVD drive and use the mouse curser to find them.

Personally I've never much liked Easter Eggs. So I can say if they are there or is that a joke.

**note the extra segments cover why that section of the film was dark and why it cant be enhanced again**

I actually kind of liked it. I got it 4 like $15 NZ and that was the two disc set. There must have been animosity when WB decided to use symbols as remote pointers, and come on guys u gotta love the cheap ass Time and Apollonia 6 videos on it, and yes it did have a kitchen sink mentality.

You also have to remember that the movie was shot in 1983-84, when DVDs weren't even on the radar. There were no thoughts given in the filming of ANY movie, let alone a "risky" film like Purple Rain, of archiving unused material for release some 20 years later. So, honestly, they may not have been included because they either don't exist or have deteriorated to a point where they're unwatchable.

Kinda like most of Graffiti Bridge. smile

Prince is O.K as an actor as long as the charecter isn't too far of a stretch. As The Kid he was pretty good because that was basically him. There are a lot of mediocre actors out there. Will Smith is funny, has a good presence but he basically plays the same part over and over again and he's a huge movie star. Now Samuel L and Denzel, those brothers can ACT!

Samuel can act when he wants to. But his big budget movies tend to be a variation on the same theme with a different hairstyle.

I don't know if this was discussed whe the DVD first came out, but the letterbox version in the 20 Aniversary release is just the full screen version cropped at the top and bottom. I usually like letterbox DVDs because you get to see more of the scenes on the side, but in this case we actually lose part of the image. That was my biggest disappointment about the set.

My question to those of you in the know, was the the original full screen version of the PR DVD the theatrical version in pan and scan or was PR originally filmed in the full screen ratio and cropped to fit the theater screens?

I was very happy with it. Of course, I knew about everything that was on the discs from reading the responses here on the org. I bought the DVD before I even had my first DVD player (once movies get old, they are hard to find).

I was very pleased with all of Disc 2, I loved the music videos, and I loved the director's commentary. I knew better than to expect the deleted scenes from the movie because that will probably never happen.

It's funny you should say that. I was watching the movie "Jackie Brown" last night. Samuel had me cracking up with his fake pony-tail, God did that look bad!!

I'm still looking for the release of Purple Rain--Director's Cut!

BTW, have you ever seen the original UNCUT script (originally titled Dreams)?

Purple Rain was shot between 1.66:1 and 1.85:1, and not at 2.35:1 as many big budget movies are now filmed. It was shown widescreen at the theaters.

Are you sure that the Anniversary DVD has been cropped? I wouldn't put it past Warners, but I didn't do a side by side comparison of the pan and scan vs. the widescreen DVD.

Many 16:9 (1.78:1) widescreen monitors will automatically crop the image to fit the screen, thus avoiding bars on the side or top and bottom.
