I was at school in my art class and we had the radio on.The DJ played "Girls And Boys" then mentioned something about the Revolution breaking up.I was thrilled with the news.Around this time (late 1986),people were saying that Prince was losing it,his popularity was slipping, etc. It was refreshing for him to start over with a new band.

Is it this one? http://www.youtube.com/wa...UZui8i5iKE She doesn't sound too pissed imho. Besides the interview taken in 1990, nearly four years since they were fired so I don't think that was the interview. [Edited 8/14/06 6:19am]

I totally agree. In terms of musicianship, the Revolution was probably P's weakest band. The pre-Revolution line up with Dez and Andre was more talented with regard to musicianship. L&W are great song writers and good musicians, Bobby Z was ok at best, Dr. Fink was ok as well, and Brown Mark was forgettable. Te Revolution could not hold a candle to The SOTT/Lovesexy band nor the different incarnations of the NPG. In the Beautiful Strange interview P said that he likes to change bands every few years. Santana talked about changing bands in the liner notes of Dance of the Rainbow Serpent. Musicians like P and Santana realize when a band has reached the zenith of its existence. As musicians they are always evolving, thus there bands will change. It is a necessary component to the journey. Look at Jimi's transition from the Experience to The Band of Gypsys and afterward. So to answer your question, I didn't care that the Revolution era ended. I thought the following era was much better. It represented growth. Your right on the money! only issue is how P finished it; he should of sat down and just said 'look guys i want to move on but we're still cool'; instead he just fired everyone!

I recall a Black Beat magazine article from this era. They had an interesting theory about why Prince fired the Revolution...
He knows that if the Time reunion thing really happens, they're gonna come out smoking.Prince doesn't want to be caught with his pants down if you recall,in 1986 there was alot of talk about a Time reunion and movie co-starring Janet Jackson.

I was around 19 years old and I heard a DJ on the radio say that Prince had fired The Revolution and the next album was going to be done all by himself like in the past.
The first album to officially be called "Prince and the Revolution" was "Purple Rain" which I loved. The following albums that had the name "Prince and the Revolution" were "Around The World In A Day" and "Parade" which were a totally different "far out" "artsy/fartsy" sounding Prince. I had assumed that The Revolution was responsible for influencing this style change so when I heard they were breaking up, I was absolutely thrilled. When I got "Sign O The Times" and saw Prince was still on his artsy/fartsy trip, I was pissed and that finally sunk in that hardcore jammin' "old Prince" was gone forever and never coming back. Andy is a four letter word.

I was 14 and didn't have an opinion on the news one way or the other, however, a few years later, I think I subconsciouly started missing Wendy & Lisa, especially when I heard Fruit At the Bottom. In other words, I was missing them, but I didn't know I was missing them.
