Where were U when Prince & The Revolution broke up in 1986? And how did you take the bad news? First of all, I didn't ever know about the break-up until weeks before the release of Sign 'O' The Times. Two things that I remember most:
1. With Shelia E. around, I wasn't really going to miss Bobby Z too much. But it really was sad to see that Brownmark, Wendy, & Lisa were no longer a part of Prince's life. 2. During their first interview since being fired, Wendy (sitting next to Lisa) was pissed! I miss I could find that footage in YouTube.

I remember hearing about it and being a bit surprised, but I didn't consider it bad news. There was still another PRINCE album coming out, so I was cool with it. Just interested to see where he'd go next. I've gone to find myself. If I should return before I get back, keep me here.

I was only six and couldnt remember. I was too busy to start grade K to notice Prince's world. My peeps who was older around what happen said themselves they barely noticed the breakup. All they know was seeing Prince with a different band when SOTT came out. [Edited 8/13/06 8:39am]

Anyhoo, Wendy mentioned in an interview that it was very hurtful listening to SOTT when Prince barely added any songs that he worked with W&L from the Dream Factory project.

I was in a hotel room in London.
I remember being surprised immediately, but also thinking this was not untypical of Prince - seemingly suddenly doing something which possibly heralded another unexpected change of direction. I was more excited than in any way disappointed, but I suspect that was partly because I had been lucky to see them play together live before the split. Me too. I was busy raising my family so I barely noticed. I tend to look forward anyway so I didn't miss 'em then and I don't miss 'em now. Prince, in you I found a kindred spirit...Rest In Paradise.

I remember I was in school at the time and I was absolutely gutted - there were rumours flying around that he had sacked his band - but I didnt beleive it - even back then I was always dead protective over him 'Ive never been 1 2 hide my feelings, Baby, u blow my mind I painted your face upon my ceiling, I stare at it all the time...' http://www.myspace.com/welshmess

I never heard about the break up. P was so far off my radar at the time that I had no clue what was going on in his world. I can't even say when I first noticed they were gone.

Honestly, the news didn't bother me at all.
1. I was 16 and sitting on my front porch, watching the neighborhood brotha's play basketball while listening to my sony walkman. 2. I was into Prince before The Revolution, so I knew what he could do without 'em. 3. The DJ said that Prince was already working on his next album, if Prince didn't need The Revolution neither did I.

As long as Prince still xisted, I couldn't care less about who was in his band! I always support his decisions anyway..

I don't remember where I was. But I do know that I thought as long as he kept putting out albums I didn't care if he ditched the Revolution. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

I was in high school. I didn't really even know about the date of break up until you posted the date. I couldn't have cared less about it back then. I'm not a prince fan, nor was I back in those days. News: Prince pulls his head out his ass in the last moment.
Bad News: Prince wasted too much quality time doing so. You have those internalized issues because you want to, you like to, stop.

at myself... i just saw the 'bad news' what was bad about it? the sott/lovesexy band was MUCH better WORLDS better... hell the NPG was better than the REV ever was.

I totally agree. In terms of musicianship, the Revolution was probably P's weakest band. The pre-Revolution line up with Dez and Andre was more talented with regard to musicianship. L&W are great song writers and good musicians, Bobby Z was ok at best, Dr. Fink was ok as well, and Brown Mark was forgettable. Te Revolution could not hold a candle to The SOTT/Lovesexy band nor the different incarnations of the NPG. In the Beautiful Strange interview P said that he likes to change bands every few years. Santana talked about changing bands in the liner notes of Dance of the Rainbow Serpent. Musicians like P and Santana realize when a band has reached the zenith of its existence. As musicians they are always evolving, thus there bands will change. It is a necessary component to the journey. Look at Jimi's transition from the Experience to The Band of Gypsys and afterward. So to answer your question, I didn't care that the Revolution era ended. I thought the following era was much better. It represented growth. perfection is a fallacy of the imagination...

I was in my first year of high school & I seem to remember
it being a bit of a surprise seeing as he was kicking so much ass at the time. I was real curious as to what was coming next.... and then.... Bam! Sign O The Times! On a funnier note, I played the song SOTT over & over when it first came out. Man, I loved it & I remember telling my mom that Prince had just broken up his band and made his new song by himself. To which she replied: yeah, it sure sounds like it! "Hyperactive when I was small, Hyperactive now I'm grown, Hyperactive 'till I'm dead and gone"
