In one brief sentence, state why. I don't want any proselytizing, nonsense BS. ONE sentence. Nail it down to BRIEF. (this is based on response from prev. forum, don't debate topic)) Wow, your request went to hell in a handbasket in record time. This forum was based on a PREVIOUS forum orgers responded to. The majority prefer his older music (pre 1996). I initiated this thread to get some idea of WHY. So you did a poll of every orger and found out that the majority prefers Prince pre 1996? Or are you just going off of the general complaints of people? You are asking about a 10year slice of music vs. the almost 20years of music before it do you think that has anything to do with it? There are no false assumptions except yours. People are entitled to their opinions. I,m not under the impression fans completely dislike P's music the past 10 years. Excuse me--reread the words of yours that I italicized. Is the title of your thread "Why orgers dislike Prince's music in the past 10 years"? Yes, it is. [Edited 8/14/06 18:11pm] "DISLIKE...as compared to... previous work." I safely assume the orgers can read and the "topic" headline is short..... I have a long list of responses from orgers who happen to prefer the older stuff. I haven't been into MJ since Dangerous. Would it make sense for me to join a MJ fansite and bitch about how he has lost it. Wow, I could not have said it any better. This whole thread has left me shaking my head. If Prince's music was continually missing the mark for me, you bet your ass I would be gone. It's not to say that there haven't been any misses and that goes past 10 years but I just can't picture myself continually bitching about someone I supposedly like. But that me. I for one am gone in the sense that I don't buy Prince albums anymore. I frequent this site cos I still listen to the old stuff. Mohammed Ali was one of the best fighters ever. Nowadays you or me could probably beat him up. That doesn't stop us from calling him great. His achievements still inspire people regardless of whether he can still box do those things or not. Same goes for Prince.

A. In the last 10 years, Prince has made several non mainstream "experimental" albums. He is as daring as ever musically. B. Even when he is going toward the mainstream, like with Rave Un2 the Joy fantastic, or 3121 he is still way out there both stylistically and soundwise when compared to the radio, other current artists, or what is "mainstream". In 1999, Rave Un2 the Joy Fantastic came out and a lot of hardcore fans blasted it for being "too commercial" or biting trends. Realistically, nothing out at the time sounded like that album. It was a Prince album. Too eclectic for anyone other pop artist to do. Same with Musicology and 3121. Sure, Prince borrows ideas from what is trendy and tried them out, but if you have been paying attention he's been doing that since day one. Bottom line is this : People at the org are, in general, hardcore Prince nerds. Being so, we are super critical and overanalytical about everything. In 1985 hardcore Prince fans bitched about Around the World in a day. Now it's considered a classic. Ask Vainandy. Time always changes people's perceptions. There was a time when Lovesexy was considered a disappointing Prince album---now many people admit to loving it. See what people think in another 10 years. [Edited 8/11/06 20:41pm] You make some good points, but I was around for the eighties and the fact that each album was a surprise was what was so cool about Prince's music. Although I personally love TRC and The Truth (in part), I seriously doubt that Prince's post '88 output will be much hailed in 10 yrs time. Every artist has a peak and although I'm sure P will make more music that I love, his peak is long over.

Why don't you try to become a moderator so you can control what people do and say in these threads? Again, I answered your question. You are just as guilty of taking this thread off of topic as I am. I take issue with the title of this thread because it starts off with YOUR highly subjective opinion that orgers dislike Prince's music in the last 10 years. I am disappointed that you decided to become so impolite . I think I fairly addressed the issue that the title of your thread is loaded and actually a bit of bait. "New Power slide...."

No need to get personal. I've already told you why the RIAA figures you posted were baloney. You say they are baloney, but they are how the States keep track of sales. Like or not, you have yet to show me data indicating otherwise. Again, you calimed that none of Prince's albums in the last 10 years are among his biggest sellers. According to the RIAA you are wrong. Go back and re read my post. This is why I can't debate with you, because you don't listen to anything that's said or you respond to what you imagine has been said rather than what actually has been said. I think you are way off, I have specifically quoted your words and then addressed them. I have simply responded to your exact words in every case, just as I am doing now. I think you are being a bit harsh and unfair. Don't you? If you're now admitting that P's sales have been down over the last 10 years then you could have saved us a lot of time and trouble by just admitting it from the start. instead of trying to dance around that obvious truth. Again, I never EVER claimed Prince's sales were better in the last 10 years than ever. I simply countered your claim that none of his albums in the last 10 years have been among his 10 best sellers. Your were wrong. I proved my point with facts from the recognized legit sales tracker where I am. You didn't like it so instead of finding contrary data, you resort to insults. And before you say "sales don't mean shit", they do when you're talking about the amount of people who think an artist's music has gone downhill. This is really basic stuff. And there we go. After claiming that "your own ears" are the only gauge you need to hear/see that Prince has lost it, you own up and admit that sales matter to you. Bottom line: You equate sales with artistic quality. I don't. That's the sticking point to our debate. Good for you and Ashlee Simpson. I guess Batman is a better album that Sign O' The Times according to you and the amount of albums sold. [Edited 8/15/06 10:00am] "New Power slide...."

This is unbelievable! Listen! The point about specific albums only came up about 4 posts into the debate. Go back and check that out if you don't believe me. You had already been trying to dodge the very point which you are now more or less admitting for some time by then. Alright, let's recap: Please copy these points as I do and refute anything that you disagree with. Did you tell me that sales did or did not matter? You have gone back and forth on this point. I maintain that sales do not indicate whether Prince has "lost it" or not. Did you tell me than NONE of Prince's albums in the last 10 years are among his top 10 selling albums ever? Yes. You did. I then used data from the RIAA which counts sales in America to prove otherwise. I'd be happy to look at any other figures you can find. Did I ever claim that Prince sold better in the last 10 years than the previous 10? No. I only claimed that, historically, Prince has rarely sold an album in blockbuster numbers-except for Purple Rain, Batman, and Diamonds and Pearls. The main point we are debating the fact that you think that Prince has "lost it" and that the world shares your viewpoint. You back up this claim with sales figures, and what you hear from people you know, TV, and magazines. I disagree. I say that your viewpoint is yours to have, but that not everyone agrees with you. I point out Prince's recent return to America's limelight that began with the Musicology Tour and has continued up to right now. That is the crux of our argument, right? I am not trying to make you upset, just trying to reach a common ground. [Edited 8/15/06 10:33am] "New Power slide...."

When people ask me what kind of music I listen to and I say Prince Their first response is "Oh yeah I like his old stuff" And that bugs the crap out of me. To me I get disappointed when others say that and that makes me feel that Prince lost his mojo (only because I feel that eveyrone should like him).I like the fact that he likes to play something different from what is out there but at the same time what he plays doesnt coincide with what is going on in the now. Quiet frankly I am getting tired of being dissappointed by an album that is labled "highly anticipated" and it really not being worth the wait. I've met probably about a dozen people over the last 10 years who say the same thing. Some of them were fully fledged fans who fell by the wayside. I've never met anyone, anywhere in the real world that didn't think that. If not for the org I wouldn't know that such people existed.

The majority of orgers don't DISLIKE P's music the past 10 yrs, just prefer the older stuff. Summarizing the responses to this forum, here are the top 10 explanations you gave:
1. P's lost creative energy, edge...lacks inspiration 2. Songs just aren't as good...generic, formula based 3. Fans have gotten older..listen to less music, 4. Musical landscape has changed past 30 years 5. His ego is too big. 6. Too many "Yes" people around him 7. P lacks outside musical influences..too insulated 8. Rap...P tries to be hip 9.
