I usually like letterbox DVDs because you get to see more of the scenes on the side, but in this case we actually lose part of the image. That was my biggest disappointment about the set.
My question to those of you in the know, was the the original full screen version of the PR DVD the theatrical version in pan and scan or was PR originally filmed in the full screen ratio and cropped to fit the theater screens? Purple Rain was shot between 1.66:1 and 1.85:1, and not at 2.35:1 as many big budget movies are now filmed. It was shown widescreen at the theaters. Are you sure that the Anniversary DVD has been cropped? I wouldn't put it past Warners, but I didn't do a side by side comparison of the pan and scan vs. the widescreen DVD. Many 16:9 (1.78:1) widescreen monitors will automatically crop the image to fit the screen, thus avoiding bars on the side or top and bottom. I wanted to see how much the image had been cleaned up for the new edition so i did a side by side comparison w/ 2 dvd players and picture in picture and that's how I noticed that the top and bottom of the image was cropped on the widescreen formatted one.

Well, I'm pleased with the Purple Rain DVD. When I bought it, it was the first time I watched it in years and the image was so much sharper. Now the bonus DVD was the real treat! Learning about First Avenue, having JJ and TL give Prince his props and just going through the whole evolution of Purple Rain.

Fuckin' Warners. If prince.org were to be made idiot proof, someone would just invent a better idiot.

the reissue was okay. it was ambitious, what with the 2 disc treatment and all. there was some stuff that i thought could have been included (like what? duuuurrrhhh...how'd i know you'd ask that? ) and some stuff i didn't expect them to include, like some of the promo clips. the lack of prince's involvement was a bit of an elephant in the living room, but that's to be expected, right? i'm happy with it. i play the little MTV party feature sometimes, just cuz it's fun and retro and reminds me of being a kid.

One disappointing bit was when the director was going on about him getting his start at 7th avenue, they would show some old ass (pre 1981) footage of performing, instead we all got was some cheap ass polaroid style snapshots of him c.1983-84.
Also the bit about the temperature dropping to -60 on November 3rd 1983 was a load of shit, it dropped to about freezing and it was barely cold enough for snow. 17 Years ago I made a commitment to Prince
