Plz help...Purple Rain question (regarding his dad) In the movie, after Prince goes home to his mother who is sitting outside, Prince runs inside to find his dad. He walks into some room and sees his father playing a song on the piano, which I LOVE....

Fathers Song If prince.org were to be made idiot proof, someone would just invent a better idiot.

Yes, Father's Song. The basic melody reappears in Computer Blue. There is no official available studio recording of Father's Song and I've not even heard of a bootleg version. There is a recording of Prince playing it live in concert on the piano, though.

Also, if you are interested, the Purple Rain song book has the song transcribed for piano and guitar chords.

I wonder if his dad actually wrote that song? It's great music. "Venus de Milo" was written by his father(also a beautiful song). John Nelson had some talent and passed it on. That DNA is powerful stuff...

Prince's father is credited with co-writing Christopher Tracy's Parade and Under The Cherry Moon from Parade, not Venus de Milo, and even then it not sure how much input he had if any. He is also co-credited with Father's Song, but again, whether he really did have any involvement or whether he was credited to further blur the edges of reality/fantasy of the film's story, who knows? It has been said that Prince occasionally gave his Father credits simply so he would have a steady source of income from the royalties without it seeming like charity.

Prince actually wrote 'Fathers Song', despite crediting John L. Nelson for it
in some documentation (the original copyright claim, and also the Purple Rain music book actually correctly credits the song soley to Prince) The real giveaway is the copyright entry at the Library of Congress, as it's copyrighted to "Controversy Music" which is Prince. If Prince's father had truly contributed to the track, it would've had an additional credit for another publisher.

I don't think Prince's father barely if any actually sit down and wrote any songs with Prince. Hell Prince's father was too damn old and like 70 at the time too to be trying to write any songs.
Like Metalorange sort of said Prince only credit his father and also some of his other associates who got credit but didn't actually wrote on certain songs just to help getting them some income. [Edited 8/8/06 16:10pm]
