I, too, have known people who have not heard of Prince. One of my relatives in fact actually thought Prince died in the mid 90's from aids. Thank God Black Sweat came out, is all I can say.

I was in a 'multimedia' store recently buying a DVD, when I stumbled across "What Time Is It?" CD really cheap (I only had it on tape). I took it to the register, and the young man (YM) at the register looked at it and said, "Oh, is this the guy who puts that thing to his throat and makes the funny sound with his voice?"

me: No, that's Roger Troutman (sp?) from Zapp
YM: Oh. Who's this?
me: Morris Day & the Time.
YM: shrug
me: have you seen "Purple Rain"? ya know, "Jungle Love"?
YM: yeah, but a loooong time ago.
me: It came out when I was a senior in high school.
YM: It couldn't have been THAT long ago!
(I turned and looked at my sister)
me: Excuse me?!
YM: I meant it came out like 5 years ago, right?
me: noooo- 1984, sweetie.
YM: Really?! Oh. I don't even remember it.
me: HOW OLD ARE U?!
YM: 21. I just graduated from college.... (Charlie Brown sounds)
(My sister walked away)
eek

falloff falloff falloff Can't top that one!

Reading the reactions here its seems like some of you seem to forget that a lot of young people never experienced the Prince 'hype' at the time of Purple Rain.
Because they were just to little around that time, or just werent born.

And even the 'older' ones, who maybe own 1 or 2 Prince records probably only know much else then the few 'big hits' coming after that: Raspberry Beret, Kiss, the hits from Diamond and Pearls and The Most Beautifull Girl in the World.

I noticed that even in the Netherlands, which has always had quite a loyal fanbase, only the 'fams' seem to follow his steps right now. The main public probably doesnt even know he is still making records, i mean: his singles in the last 5 years merely did get into the charts over here en dropped out of it quickly.

In danceclubs in holland they often play one or two Prince tracks during the night, when i was clubbing frequently (late eighties / begin nineties) it always were: 1999, Erotic City and Kiss. Nowadays the main Prince track during those night seems to be Cream.

When I was working at Hollister in the mall, me and this black guy were talking about music, and he asked what I listen to. Here's how the conversation went:

Him: What do you listen to?
Me: Mostly Prince
Him: Who?
Me: ... Prince... you know. Prince. The singer.
Him: I don't know who that is....
Me: ... uhh
Him: Ohhh is he that "The color purple" guy?
Me: Purple Rain?
Him: Yeah! Is he still alive?
Me: eek

My boyfriend thought Prince quit the music business after Diamonds and Pearls... He did not know otherwise until 2005.

I am lucky that the people I know does follow PRince's career and some were Prince's fans before he crossover but still they arent big fans as I am. Still I had a similar occurance too with someone who doesn't know too much about Prince. It was at a record store like back in 2001 when I asked the clerk to see if they had some Prince albums at the store.
Me: Hey i would like to know do you have Controversy album available?
Record Store clerk: What?
Me: Prince's album called Controversy.
The clerk: OH is that a new album of his?
Me: No, it made in 1981.
THe clerk: Well, i am sorry but we dont have it.
Me: Okay do you have the 1999 album?
The clerk: I never heard of that one before and so who is the artist so I can look it up?
Me: Prince.
disbelief

More or less all people I know have heard of Prince, but everybody thinks of him as an eccentric (in the bad way), and think he is not making music anymore or he died long time ago, or something... but I had this conversation recently:

him: so what do you listen to?
me: I listen to Prince
him: *patronizing glance* oh yeaaah... that strange guy...
I liked some of his songs...Purple Rain, Kiss...
he has not released music anymore, isn't it? and isn't he gay?
me: rolleyes ...well, he has been doing some stuff since then
(I mention his induction into the R&R Hall of Fame, and the George Harrison tribute amazing performance)
him: *really surprised* Oh!! Didn't know Prince played guitar!!
me: eek ... hrmph *change the subject*

[Edited 8/6/06 22:01pm]

Because they r programmed not 2 know him.

The hits have been limited 2 Kiss, LRC, WDC, PR, 1999 and IWBUL.

When, aside from ur indie station did u last hear TMBGITW, 7, D&P, Cream, Gett Off, Thieves in the Temple, Alphabet St., U Got the Look, SOTT, ICNTTPOYM, or Controversy? Were those not hits or songs that were played pre-1995?

Prince is now the kind of artist u have 2 introduce 2 ur friends, yes, even the hits. Clear Channel....cleared the funk a long time ago.....making radio useless. I wish the law was never passed that u could own more than 1 station in a market. They collected them like hot wheels.
[Edited 8/7/06 0:12am]

I've heard Alphabet Street, Soft & Wet and Gett Off in 5pm traffic mixes on R&B radio. R&B radio plays I Wanna Be Your Lover and Adore like they are new releases. I listen to my Ipod, but inbetween, I haven't gotten through the week listening to (adult) R&B stations without hearing those.

Honerable Mention: Sunshine and If You Were Here Tonight by Alexander O'Neal are also playing like Alex is currently on tour and playing arenas.

I've Found people who don't know Prince tend to confuse him and Jackson.

falloff
News: Prince pulls his head out his ass in the last moment.
Bad News: Prince wasted too much quality time doing so.

Wait a minute...what? Arent all the super old songs played regularly in Japan, or countries like Japan? confuse I've heard that they still listen to Vanilla Ice, and no Prince??? err

Well, I live on a strange island in Japan, so they don't know SHIT about The Kid. But yeah, I'm sure the little man's popular in Tokyo,

But no matter, my Japanese girlfriend likes Prince, especially the song Love. wink
