What an interesting question to pose...
I think he was more honest on the Black Album. I think he pulled it originally because he realized it looked too deeply into his soul. The Truth, while I love it, is a lot more about preaching than self-examination. I don't know, this is a hard question to ask. When I listen to the black album, I certainly find myself scratching my head. The Truth is a pretty easy to understand album. I also don't think that the Black Album was just Dark Funk. I sincerely think the Black Album meant a lot more to Prince than he was willing to let on. One thing for sure, The Truth and the Black Album are easily two of my favorites.
