Match The Prince Love Interest to the Song! Now that Prince is single again it is time to take stock on (His)tory with women. Apologies if this has been talked about before but I have never seen it!
No one would dispute that some of Prince's songs have been written with a particular woman in mind so this topic is about connecting the woman to the song and arguing both positive and negative over why you think there is/isn't a link. In most cases it is taken as given that Prince hooked up with the woman...So here goes: 1. Scandalous = Kim Basinger + She giggles and seduces on the scandalous sex suite like it was written for her. - Prince met her on the Batman film and given his prolific output it is likely he wrote the song before his involvement with the film. 2. Insatiable = Lara Flyn Boyle + I reckon the timing is about right for writing the song and being with the woman. - I have no firm evidence. Maybe Lara likes to be called Martha as a nickname? 3. Adore + Forever in My Life = Susannah Melvoin + I don't think there is much dispute with these.... - I could be sadly mistaken. 4. Sweet Baby + Morning Papers = Mayte +Fatherly tone gels with Prince not being with Mayte yet at this stage. - But then again she appears naked in one of the symbol videos so who am I kidding? 5.Damn U = Carmen Elektra + Timing is about right and she had 'playable' hair back then. - The spectre of Mayte looms... 6.Gotta Broken HEart Again = Patrice Rushen + He loved her but she wasn't interested and told him to get lost. - The song is about infidelity but he never got with her so it doesn't quite work. I wasn't aware he ever dated Flynn-Boyle. The only Twin Peaks girl I was aware of him dating was Sherilyn Fenn. I heard a rumour back when D&P was first dropped that "Martha" was a nickname he had for Basinger, but I have no idea if that is true. 3. Dunno. It's hard to pinpoint with a lot of these songs, as Prince was often dating more than one woman at any given time. For example, his early days with Mayte, he was also seeing Nona Gaye, so it becomes difficult to separate out which songs were written for one or the other. Add in the fact that he often recycles songs from earlier eras, and it can be quite confusing.

The Beautiful Ones = Vanity and Susan Moonsie Come = Nona Gaye Nothing Compares 2 U = Jerome Benton (he wrote this song-according to my conversation with Jerome-about Jerome's breakup with his then girlfriend in 1986 before they went to Paris to film Under The Cherry Moon.) IB and Come may not be love ballads, but they are love interest songs. | |
