U2frontman Bono has topped a survey of the most influential pop stars of the last 25 years, commissioned to mark music channel MTV's quarter-centenary. Four thousand people for a survey isn't really that much, and it seems like they must have asked a lot of very young music listeners, I mean I don't see how Justin Timberlake, Gwen Stefani and Pink have influenced anyone so far. Fair enough the Spice Girls who launched the careers of many a girl group since, you could also add Take That for doing the same with boy groups. Robbie Williams is successful but hardly influential, he doesn't even have a recogniseable style of his own to influence anybody with. Adam Ant? A couple of great early tracks but for New Romantic influence and success I'd have to put Duran Duran and others above him.

I don't think you need Britney Spears AND Christina Aguilera, one or the other would do to represent princess popstar divas. Beyonce Knowles, well she is top of the pile of modern day wanna-be divas. But Pete bloody Docherty, can't see he's influenced anyone, he's just an 'in' anti-hero right now.

I think there's been far less influential popstars in the last 25 years than previously because of the industry churning out one-off hits rather than nurturing long-term careers, and personally I'd have far more 80s acts in there.

It's hard for American's to judge this list. Some of the more recent influential artists in the US have been Missy Elliott/Timbaland/Pharrell, Nirvana (like it or not, they were influential), etc. Some of those are just too recent to be influential. Ah well, it's just another list I guess. Prince seems to be the new "trendy nod to the old school" on these kind of lists.

Great question. Same thing with Beyonce and Britney. disbelief
I'm not a fan of "old Prince". I'm not a fan of "new Prince". I'm just a fan of Prince. Simple as that

In terms of taking MTV to the top of the "video/music" channel heap, I have no problem with the list....think about it...if u're old enuff to remember watching MTV in those early years, all of the artists listed had a hell of a hand lifting it to where it is now....

...however, in terms of true musical influence....YA GOTTA BE KIDDING ME!!! Just for arguments sake...Britney Spears? Christina Applegate...er, I mean Aquilera? PINK??!!?? J-Timberlake? How bad is the music industry these days when they are considered "influential" when between them, they may have written a tenth of their own music?? omfg

I don't think it's entirely necessary to write your own material to be influential - I don't think Elvis wrote any of this tunes? But does this list then go onto discuss why these artists are influential? Being successful does not equal being influential. It's a case of, when you ask a poll, people are going to vote for their most recent favourite artists whatever the question happens to be.
