I can't really argue with the last 2 years or so but actually, it was the Emancipation era that made me think of the question. Prince was dressed a little more "normally" wearing pull over sweaters and such,married,expecting a child and even showed up on Oprah

His music isn't particularly weird or cutting edge, it's concise pop. His last tour was a fan pleasing set of hits. He appears on award shows, has even presented awards, also mainstream TV shows. His appearance is not very androgynous anymore, his hairstyle is fairly normal. He's back to his given name. He's not so overtly sexual or nasty, doesn't cuss. I think Prince always has and always will stand out in most ways.

Sadly, the sheer fact that he's an instrumentalist makes him abnormal in today's music market
