still i keep vicki waiting can someone please explain these lyrics to me ?
"I'm of the mind to make some mookie. phonebook..." The phone rings, it's Vicki callin' She wants me 2 come 2 the crib She says conversation's better than being lonely So I try my best to ad lib I told the joke about the woman Who asked her lover "Why is your organ so small?" He replied "I didn't know I was playin' in a cathedral." Vicki didn't laugh at all. This is where she wants 2 be I am what she wants 2 see I never known a love so sweet Still I keep Vicki waiting... Alright All is well in Gotham City The sound of terror is all U hear Sometimes a pistol takes the place of her body Sometimes her body's here But U see when crime is your only love All that matter is the present, the here and now People, people, whatever floats this joker's boat Is whatever this joker will bang Oh yeah Talk of children still frightens me Is my character enough 2 be One that deserves a copy made? This I one day, hope 2 see Until then she's held at bay By my animal-like persistence Or maybe she's just 2 proud 2 say That fate brought us together And this is where she wants 2 stay All is well in Gotham town This is where she wants 2 be I am what she wants 2 see I've never known a love so sweet Still I keep Vicki Still I keep Vicki Still I keep Vicki waiting (waiting) Aha aha Still I keep Vicki Still I keep Vicki waiting This is where she wants 2 be " the embassy shut to keep the fools out " - as above, so below.

okay here's the part where someone gives you a comprehensive answer and you twist the words to show that
a) Prince is living for false media not for his soul, b) how dare he live it up with pretty women who aren't pretty on the inside etc... c) Prince is a no good heartbreaker. He's a liar and a cheater too. You don't know why you let him do these things to you. Your friends keep telling you that Prince ain't no good and they don't know that you would leave 'im if you could etc... Damn... we get it. Okay I promise forreal this time. That was the last one. The gate was open so I let myself in. These things are like crack once you're addicted, rehab and serious prayer are your only hope.

The song was originally called Anna Waiting for Anna Garcia who was a young girl Prince was dating at the time. But he must surely have changed the lyrics a lot, I doubt originally it had mentions of Gotham city and the Joker in it! I guess that was added to give it more relevance to Batman and of course Vicki Vale is a character in the film.
Taking it as is, the song is sung in the character of the Joker. The first line is a sample from the movie, where the Joker sees a photograph of Vicki Vale and fancies her. I guess 'mookie' is a bit like 'nookie' or 'making love'. The crib is obviously slang for 'residence'. The joke, at least as I take it, is a smutty innuendo about the size of their relative genitals, or the woman being big, an organ obviously being small in relative to the size of a cathedral rather than say a church - it's not that he's small, it's that she's big. The basis of the song is the Joker/Prince keeping Vicki waiting - basically, he is refusing to commit to her but she keeps hanging on in hope he will. The section about Gotham City shows it is the Joker singing - 'all is well' and yet 'terror is all you hear' clearly what the evil Joker prefers. He is saying he can't commit to a longterm relationship because of the nature of his job, constantly living on the edge in the 'here and now'. He takes his opportunities as they come along, such as sleeping with any girl that takes his fancy. Now is all this fantasy or a metaphor for Prince's life as a rock star? The song then goes onto reveal that Prince/The Joker has considered the possibility of settling down, having children, etc. But his persistance in refusing to commit is stronger than her persistance in trying to get him to commit, or, as he muses, is it that she likes this on/off relationship even though she doesn't admit it to herself, that it is her 'fate'. Or perhaps that's Prince trying to convince himself she enjoys being left hanging on in this relationship to make himself feel better about treating her badly and cheating on her constantly. So a comic, quirky little song, but perhaps it reveals a lot about how Prince justified cheating on his girlfriends to himself. [Edited 8/2/06 3:46am]

[Edited 8/2/06 3:46am] metalorange THANK YOU!!! thats so cool you wrote so much about it. I really enjoyed reading what you had to say. I had a feeling this would be a good song lyric to discuss. I didnt really have any interpretation in my own head, so its really cool to read someone else's. Thank you!! and Thank you bananacologne for the pics. appreciated.
