Older Prince Fans

When you first saw Prince on video or on an LP photo what was the first thing that came to mind? I remember first seeing Prince in the "Sexuality" video and my first impression of him was one of confusion confuse because I liked his music and his look, but I wasn't quite sure if the whole thing was right or acceptable. Of course I was just around 8 or 9 years old razz . What was your first impression of Prince for those of you who are old enough to remember? Thanks, Nurse cool .

... infatuation at first sight when I saw him on American Bandstand. I was 9 going on 10. But I fell into his voice before I actually ever saw what he looked like. He was a different kind of musician who was doing and saying things with a type of boldness that for my young mind was quite baffling but provoked my curiousity. I was totally feelin' the brotha!!! fro

and my first thought was:

"Where can I hide this so my mother won't kill me?"

LOL! It was like that for me too! I fell for him through his music first when I was 8 but I didn't see what he looked like until the early 80's and when I finally saw him, he was so intriguing, exciting and unique that I knew I'd be a fan for a long time. It always amazes me how my young mind could really feel him enough to appreciate him.

The first time I saw Prince was the Controversy video in 1981. My first impression was that "this guy must be on drugs!". The first time I ever heard Prince on the radio was back in 1979. The song "I wanna be your lover" was a hit. My first impression was "I thought the singer was a girl".

The first time was the Little Red Corvette video, I was 13 and I remember shaking my head and thinking what a weirdo. Then I don't know why, I was suprisingly intrigued when I first saw the "When Doves Cry" video. I never paid attention to Prince before that. I don't know, must have been that bathtub and the Doves and that hair and his face. He was handsome to me, which was strange at that time. Made me want to know more about him.

The first time was in '79 and there was a promo pic of him in a vest, no shirt, ahnk (sp?) around his neck and a huge afro. We all thought he was cute and stuff, but I paid no attention to the music until Purple Rain. I thought he looked like Elvis with the stand up collar and all.
I've gone to find myself. If I should return before I get back, keep me here.

I was 11 or 12. I saw him perform Little Red Corvette on Solid Gold. I thought he was ok, liked the song, and found it a bit confusing that he wore high heels (at the time I had no clue he was short.) He did not leve much of an impression.

But shortly thereafter, Purple Rain was released. I heard from a friend of mine that he was "nasty" and his shows where "R-rated". Being a horny 12 or 13 year old at the time made me interested.
About a year later, my friends neighbors had recorded purple rain on VHS, and I got to watch the movie. I was blown away. At a young age, I actually thought it was a good movie. And the performances where amazing to me. I was pretty much hooked.

The first picture I saw of Prince was the 'For You' album cover, I thought he was FINE with that big A-- fro

Then I saw him on American Bandstand. He was still cute and I liked his music, but that dancing was throwing me off a bit. I didn't care, MJ was to the curb and PRINCE was the man!

First I remember of Prince was in 1983/4 and my dad was going mad abouut 1999 (song, not album). next was when Let's Go Crazy was released, loved it, and I went to buy the 12". Unfortunately I was only 12 and it had a 'Parental Advisory' sticker on it, so I ended up with 'You Spin Me Right Round (Like A Record)' by Dead or Alive. Didn't really get back into Prince until Alphabet St. / LoveSexy. Damn censorship - gave me 4 yrs to catch up!!!

I remember my granny almosting killing me cause I was listening to 'Darling Nikki.' They were soooo upset they took to me to the store and bought me a THRILLER TAPE. Michael was a safe bet then, you dig? I had no idea WHAT Prince was talking about until the adults standing around told me. So then I wanted to hear all his stuff, I was a fan. Just think Prince was the nastiest music you could listen to hands back then eyepop
