ernie isley from the isley brother is probably the most underrated guitar player
in the world of popular music.
if there was any justice he would be prAISED as top 20 guitar player.
he is almost never in best guitar player list.
i like prince more but ernie isley is better guitar player .
he is more fluent.
i base my opinion on tracks like

Ernie is indeed very underrated as a player. His solo album was a really nice one but sadly didn't do very well. I had always wished that Ernie would have gone his own way and did his own thing away from The Isley Brothers as I feel that he was constantly stuck too much within their formula of R&B which is probably why he is not more known and appreciated for his fantastic skills.

As far as who is a better player than Ernie goes, I would not say better but I think that Prince, Mick Taylor and Peter Green are without a doubt just as great and in the same league as him. And if youre also including players no longer around I would also mention Eddie Hazel.

Prince is in a league of his own-THE greatest musician alive! 2me,anyway...

I said nothing about hating his brother although the whole Mr.Big persona is just a complete embarassment and really old already.
I also like many of The Isleys songs especially Voyage to Atlantis but I think it would be much more interesting to see what Ernie could do on his own. I'm sure it would be much more enjoyable than what The Isley Brothers are doing THESE DAYS WITH R.KELLY.

Since this is just for fun, here goes my take (a good head to head): I'll go with Ernie for lead and overall sound/amps/effects/guitars. I love his guitar SOUND moreso than P's. He has a distinctive sound and is a great rhythm player as well. His solo album is a classic and his performance of "Back to Square One" on David Letterman's old NBC show was somethin' else.

I love P's funk rhythm playing more, though. I love his lead playing as well, though I'm partial to the Cloud days. The whole whammy-bar thing ain't my cup of tea, at least not comin' from P. (The whammy is an indispensable part of my own playing, though). Just love the whole, Santana-esque lead playing without the whammy.

To me, it's a tie, though I'll probably take Jesse Johnson or Eric Gales over both of them

Ernie is certainly one of my favorite guitar players. His guitar work on the Isley Bro.s song "Ballad Of The Fallen Soldier" is awesome! So is his work on "Footsteps In The Dark" Ernie can certainly hold his own against the best. As for who's better, Him or Prince? I could'nt choose. They both are very good at what they do.

Hard to say who's better. They're both pretty good. But Prince may have a certain edge because he exhibits more of his various influences in his music from jazz to rock-to fusion to progressive rock. But there are plenty of guitarists much better than Prince. Check out this brotha named Greg Howe. Totally blows Eddie Van Halen away.

However, Ernie had the benefit of playing with Jimi Hendrix (Jimi was a member of the Isley Bros band back in the early 60s) and learning alot from him as well as influencing him. Also since he hasnt led his own band and r&b musicians are never profiled, we dont know what his other influences are. We also dont know what other types of music he enjoys playing and we certainly never get to see him outside of the Isely context, so for all we know he may be the new Hendrix.
