Yep, strangely successful, not sure she's sold quite that many albums, maybe if you include albums and singles combined. According to the RIAA list she's sold
61.5 in the USA, I doubt she's sold an extra 100 million in the rest of the world, American artists tend to sell less than their US total outside the US. In the US, Barbara Steisand is the top selling female album artist according to the RIAA with 71m, Madonna is next with 63m and Mariah third (Prince's RIAA figure for the US is 39m).

I thought Madonna had the biggest worldwide sales total of any female artist? 250 million records (singles and albums), according to the December Rolling Stone cover article, but I don't have another source. shrug

I don't know how accurate, it's what the RIAA say, adding up the amount of Gold and Platinum discs they've awarded. How does the RIAA get the information, well I don't know for sure but someone told me that they get the data supplied by the record companies themselves based on records shipped. Remember, that total is only based on every half-a-million sold, I've argued that if you add up all the known inbetween figures and albums that didn't quite get to gold, his actual sales are a couple of million even higher.
