it just seems in general that the life and image that prince has been building since the late '90s is slowly dismantling, or else transitioning into some new life/career phase. his marriage, his "virtual" relationship with his fans, his religious zeal - all these things that he seemed to want his audience to think were so permanent, they all seem to be dismantling. i think we've seen the dismantling process over the past couple of years, but for the most part, the transition is "official" now with the closing of the club and the divorce.

the vibe i'm getting is that whatever he was building over the last decade or so has come to a point where it isn't working for him anymore, but at the same time, it seems like he doesn't know what to replace it with. he seems to be swimming around in the murk, coasting by on his celebrity and his legend, feeding the fans some crumbs here and there with a club show or an awards show afterparty. maybe he's just letting himself have fun with his celebrity for a while, no crime against that.

his religious commitment seems really murky right now...as always, he seems to be testing the boundaries of what's acceptable without actually diving into the potty-mouthed past...playing a few bars of "erotic city" here, traipsing around with beautiful young women there...it must be difficult to feel accepted by a religious community as someone more than just a celebrity, but at some point feel yourself straying from their expectations...i could see how things could get nebulous after a while.

anyway. i hope he figures out what his whole deal is about eventually, even if it means taking some time off to clear his head. we have enough music to tide us over for a while, and we'll always be ready for what's next. i hope he takes the introspective route with his music again like he did in the early part of this decade. i may not count those albums as among my favorites, but i do think work like "n.e.w.s", "one nite alone" and "the rainbow children" has been some of his most honest work of his career, and i'd love to see that part of him evolve.

whatever it takes to get the ya-ya's out of his system, i hope he does it full-on. he seems the most alive when he's immersed in a kajillion different projects and when he's in some way plugged-in with his fans and his peers, whether its on tour or at a celebration at paisley or even online. i hope he gets back to that place.

i can't believe the media is hopping on the whole tamar rumor. for all we know, it could be true, but i'll believe it when we see actual proof of some kind of tryst or relationship. i don't see it at all, though i guess it makes for some easy scandal rag fodder. yawn

More news from CJ.

Manuela Testolini Nelson's attorney would not comment on a NYC column's speculation Friday that Prince's new protégé came between the rock star and his wife.

"I cannot comment on anything. We have a sealed file," attorney Ed Winer, who was Tonya Puckett's divorce lawyer, told me Friday when asked about the speculation.

A couple of months ago I told FOX9 viewers that there were whispers about Prince and Tamar. On reflection, I can't believe the talk, because frankly Toni Braxton's sister does not fit the profile of previous Prince paramours. Cute as Tamar is, she is not a knockout like first wife Mayte or Manuela.

"Music-industry insiders are whispering [that] the real reason Prince split from his wife of five years [is that] Prince has been spending an inordinate amount of time with his new protégé, Tamar," the NYC gossip column reads, adding that Prince is reportedly trying to get Tamar a deal with a major label, although the insiders dismiss her as just another pretty girl singing Symbolina's songs.

Speculation about a third party may pique the interest of "Entertainment Tonight" in the biggest divorce story of 2006 in Minnesota, involving an international super star. "We're not doing the story," wrote Brad Bessey, an executive producer of "ET." I had e-mailed Bessey to make sure that "ET" didn't make the mistake other media outlets did by crediting People magazine for my scoop; People has since fixed the gaffe on its dot-com.

Hard to believe that "ET" is ignoring this while wearing out the "Breaking News" graphic on other divorces this summer. Hey, it's their air.

This story has now hit the News of the World in the UK.

Page 40

Pop Legend Prince has become "Smitten" with a shapely new protoge since his marriage broke down. It has been claimed.
The diminutive star is splitting from his wife of five years. Testolini Nelson. And music insiders say Prince has grown close to rising star Tamar, who he is to get signed with a major record label.

Not a big note but it made the UK papers.

Someone asked about the baby that Prince and Mayte had and what happened. I remember reading about it and this is what he had: (I believe it was type 2):

"Pfeiffer syndrome is a genetic disorder characterized by the premature fusion of certain bones of the skull (craniosynostosis), which prevents further growth of the skull and affects the shape of the head and face. In addition, the thumbs and big toes are broader and often shorter than normal.

Many of the characteristic facial features of Pfeiffer syndrome result from the premature fusion of the skull bones. The head is unable to grow normally, which leads to bulging and wide-set eyes, an underdeveloped upper jaw, and a beaked nose. About 50 percent of children with Pfeiffer syndrome have hearing loss (hearing loss with craniofacial syndromes), and dental problems are also common. Additionally, the thumbs and big toes are broader than normal and bend away from the other digits. Unusually short fingers and toes (brachydactyly) are also common, and there may be some webbing or fusion between the digits (syndactyly).

Pfeiffer syndrome is divided into three subtypes. Type 1 or "classic" Pfeiffer syndrome has symptoms as described above. Most individuals with type 1 have normal intelligence and a normal life span. Types 2 and 3 are more severe forms of Pfeiffer syndrome, often involving problems with the nervous system. Type 2 is distinguished from type 3 by more extensive fusion of bones in the skull, leading to a "cloverleaf" shaped head.

Pfeiffer syndrome affects about 1 in 100,000 individuals"

I still don't get why the papers keep saying Prince is trying to get Tamar signed with a major label. Isn't/wasn't she signed to Universal?

Secondly, as I brought up on Divorce Thread Part II, the timeline for Tamar to be the cause of this seems off to me. According to insiders, Mani & Prince had been seperated since last spring--was Tamar even in the picture then? Wasn't last spring when he was in Panama (and Liza Hernandez rumors were swirling)?

Thirdly, (and here is where I may be a bit in denial), even if Prince is "obsessed", "smitten", etc. with Tamar that doesn't necessarily mean they are/were intimately involved, right? (I know, denial.) I almost feel like the media needs something/someone to point to as a reason so that the news is more "interesting." and Tamar is the easiest target. The bottom line is, at this point the only people who know exactly why the marriage is ending are Mani, Prince, and probably their attornies & family.
The check. The string he dropped. The Mona Lisa. The musical notes taken out of a hat. The glass. The toy shotgun painting. The things he found. Therefore, everything seen–every object, that is, plus the process of looking at it–is a Duchamp.

So, have y'all listened to Tamar's "Sunday in the Park"?
The song seems to be about being in love and in a clandestine relationship with someone...it starts out:

"I didn't want to meet you here
This feels so wrong
We shouldn't have to live in fear
My dear
I shouldn't have to feel the need to sing this song.
I didn't want to take that chance,
But I can't decide
And if this is a real romance
At last
Why do we still feel the need to run and hide?"

blah blah blah

"I didn't want to cause her pain,
She must feel
So bad
And yet still I'm not ashamed
The game of love cannot be won
With something she never had" (whatever THAT means)

And then some crap about taking the fruit of her tree and it being better they not deceive and Sunday in the park and something about Anbesol member one too many
lol

Sounds kind of incriminating....
but that could just be me.

RE the tamar rumor :
frankly he has always had better taste

RE the divorce:

i can't say i'm surprised. from everything we know about p and how well or not he relates in a "real" relationship, i can't think of why anyone would be surprised by the divorce. it did last longer than the marriage to mayte but then geminis devour scorpios; gemini and virgo/libra have more in common.

i don't think it makes either of them "look bad" as much as run of the mill- most relationships like theirs end with divorce, don't they?

Tamar first appeared with P publicly at the NAACP Image Award Show, which was taped March 19, 2005. So, she had probably been on the scene at least several weeks before that performance, giving her and the new band enough time to rehearse. Plus, the 3121 parties date back to at least 1/20/05 and as far as I know, she was a performer at those parties.

It's possible that P and Mani were having problems before 2005, which would probably mean that the divorce has nothing to do with Liza or Tamar. According to CJ, Mani had an apartment in Chanhassen that she was evicted from December 1, 2003 for non-payment of rent. The article was posted at HQ:

Prince's wife gets the boot

T here's an eviction notice in Carver County with the name of Prince's wife on it. Chanhassen's West Village Townhomes evicted Manuela Testolini for failing to pay $820, one month's rent, due on Dec. 1, 2003. That amount plus $245 in filing fees make the total owed $1,065, according to court papers. The townhouse is near both Prince's Chanhassen home and Paisley Park. A database search shows that Testolini used Paisley Park as an address before using the townhomes as her last address. A West Village resident told me Thursday that the eviction papers were posted on the door of Testolini's unit for a time before management entered the townhome and removed some belongings. The neighbor did not know who Testolini was or that she is married to Prince. Court papers state that Testolini did not show up for court before Judge Philip Kanning on Dec. 30. A notice to Testolini was returned marked "unclaimed," according to a notation on the file. Ted Bigos, of West Village Townhomes, did not respond to a voice mail asking about the disposal of Testolini's belongings, which might have some value on eBay. A note I left at Paisley Park for Prince and Manuela also has not attracted a response. According to Us magazine, Prince and Mani married in Hawaii on New Year's Eve 2001. That makes her having an apartment as of December 2003 all the more curious. Perhaps Mani needs time to herself?

The Star Tribune link is no longer valid, but the article can be found here:

Hmmm, could have been about finances. I would assume Prince had to finance all of her businesses and maybe they had financial disagreements. shrug

Yes, it could have very well been a financial disgreement. It's not so much about the eviction, but the fact that she had an apartment in the same city she lived in with her husband dating back 2003. Maybe she rented it out to have her own space while they were going through whatever...then they reconciled and she moved back with P aound the time of Musicology. If that was the case, it would kind of squash the rumors concerning Tamar being the cause of the break up, if P and Mani were having problems before he met Tamar.

It's just another piece to the puzzle. wink

This story has now hit the News of the World in the UK.

Pretty much agree with you Jone70. The media/press is using Tamar as an easy target to attract viewers or sell papers/magazines. I believe that marriage was over way before she came to be Prince's protege, especially when it was reported early in 2005 about him making a movie with Liz Hernandez. Rumors were flying then. As far as Tamar's being signed to Universal, didn't part of Universal break up in different divisions earlier this year? As far as Tamar's career, I don't see this breaking her career one bit, if anything it will get more attention because of this.

But I feel like tthis. Most here are Prince fans and it's suppose to be about his music, I don't think he should be condemned because of what goes on in his relationships, married or not. Who he chooses to be with is truly his business and not ours. Although we are all here discussing it, but truly we can't pick the women he wants to fall in love with.

But you know what jone70,no matter what happens, if a concert happens whether it's a tour or small venue, me and my other friends that are Prince fans will be there to show support, you can bet on that. If Tamar is part of the performance, we will be there to show support for her too. I see no reason why she should be a victim in all this, no matter what rumors end up being true. After all it's all about the music anyway, not their personal life and what they do with it.

Stay strong Prince, everything will be alright!!
