I've seen theories that date it back further than that... like mid-90s...

Well, that would be odd since he hasn't been living in CA since the mid-90's...if in fact that is the address to his Hollywood home...

The track could have been recorded like in '83, for all we know. All he had to do was change the title or write new lyrics totally.

It's something he does. I remember Little Girl Wendy's Parade, Anna Waiting, an early version of Tick Tick Bang and maybe like, ermmm DOZENS of other songs he re-recorded from scratch to fit a certain mood.

If he'd told Michael B and Sonny T what he wanted from them for the beat, that might have been true. But Michael B has said it emananted from the 3 of them just jamming. Now if the beat was spontaneous and the lyrics re-written - I'd have to call that a new song!

It's been established that the real address of his rented LA house is not 3121, that was just the made-up name he gave it. So the question still remains what 3121 means to Prince and when he first came up with those numbers. Michael B. has said that he often plans albums years in advance, so maybe he'd been thinking about using those numbers for some time, even though the actual song didn't come into being until the end of 2004...

I would say that, given his bible interest nowadays, it would be way too much of a coincidence that the 31:21 (or similar to that) bible verse refers to a song and that's not where Prince got it from.

Well, word started circulating in early 2005 that he was working on a album titled 3121, so the concept at least developed during the Musicology tour days.

Musicology tour was 2004, ending before 2005, wasn't it? 3121 first appeared on the back of his jacket at the NAACP awards early 2005. I don't think there's anyway of knowing whether it developed over the Musicology tour or right after it finished.

Yes, the tour ended in 2004, but I heard the title 3121 as his next album LONG before the NAACP awards (when that appeared on the back of his jacket, many took it as confirmation of the title). In fact, I remember discussing it on here a few times in early 2005.

Where's BorisFishPaw? He was one of the first folks that I got to confirm the title once I heard it. Maybe he can help us pin down when the rumour of the album title first surfaced.
