Me thinks Prince wants or requests that you say his name or tell him his name so much, Me wonders if Prince isn't so confused he forgets his own name.

I dig the song alot. Reminds me of Beastie Boys songs from that era (the beats/scratching).

It would have been great on one of his more mainstream albums (maybe TGE)?

LOVE this song.

During the Musicology era, I wanted him to release an EP with the following tracks:

1) Call My Name
2) What's My Name?
3) My Name Is Prince
4) What's Your Name?*

* unreleased track played in rehearsal, 1987

That would have been cool.

I don't think he ever performed it with music, but at my first Prince show, July 31st 1993 at Wembley Arena, as he came back on for the encore set of new songs, the band played some background organ as he spoke the lyrics from What's My Name as a speech - at the time it was all very weird, as he had just changed his name to prince the month before, and as a new fan I just wanted him to shut up and play. When I heard What's My Name on a boot the following year, I had become much more engrossed in the ways of Prince, and thought the whole thing was kind of cool.

The speech also included lines from Race, if I remember correctly - I think he was working on both those songs around that time. He tended to throw lines from both songs into speeches between songs over the following year or two.

I'd love to have seen him play this in full with the '94-'95 NPG, or with the ONA band. Blackwell would tear this up, but there's no disputing that this song is a Michael B trademark.
