If I'm not mistaken, Joy was originally recorded and slated for the aborted 86 release of Crystal Ball. In my opinion, Joy in Repetition is misplaced. Of the following 3 albums, which one should have included Joy and where would it have fit the best?

Black Album
Lovesexy
Sign O' The Times

I'd say SOTT. In retrospect, I think it's a shame that WB wouldn't let him release the Crystal Ball record. Just think about it, all the killer songs from SOTT are already on there (except for U got the Look), and so many more that were released somewhere else later or remain unreleased.

...BTW, Empty Room '95 and Joy in Repetition are the two songs I wish I would have been in the studio when he did them. Those solos on both songs, probably may all time favorite studio solos by Prince.

It's the HUGEST shame that the original version of Crystall Ball wasn't allowed to see the light of day. It would have been the most incredible album.

I agree that Joy would probably fit best on Sign but I'm DYING to figure out how it could fit on Lovesexy.

Question of U, another jam that eclipses any of the non-P tracks. How can one album have incredible jems like Joy & ?ofU and also have crap like Graffiti Bridge & Shake. Prince should have released this as a full fledged Prince album.

Calhoun!!! I converted my boyfriend with "When the Lights Go Down". It was the very first Prince song I ever played for him. We were kickin it and I told him I wanted him to hear a song. He was spellbound. Halfway through, he asked "Who IS this?". I proudly exclaimed "Prince!!". Cali, you cited some incredible songs and yes AW you HAVE to grab Graffiti Bridge right away. Joy in gonna kick your ass. It STILL kicks mine every damn time.

I've made a few Prince-converts lately from The Vault, and especially with "When The Lights Go Down". My girlfriend had ALWAYS made fun of me for being a purplehead (she's ahardcore country fan...who should be making fun of who?) but she has been finally starting to get into his music and it was because of The Vault. My boss is another one who has asked me to burn him The Vault after hearing When the lights...he also liked 5 Women.

As for GB, never a huge fan of that album, but don't hate it. That is a good idea about burning a copy of all the Prince songs (except the title song, that song is aboslutely horrible) plus "Release It". Those non-Prince songs have always seemed like filler to me. I always start losing interest after "Joy In Rep". Maybe I'll actually hear "Still Would Stand"...great song...bad spot on the album.

Isn't it amazing that folks still think, "Oh yea, Purple Rain/1999/LRC." People who fail to follow him closely are missing out on SO MUCH GREAT MUSIC!

I love blasting people out of the water with Prince's music. Especially when they cannot reach beyond 1999 or Kiss.

I was at the NYC aftershow and have never felt the way I did when he played Joy In Repetition. And then I downloaded a copy of it and felt even more emotion in the song than I did when I was actually there. By far and away one of the best songs Prince has ever done. Hearing the live version has sort of ruined the album version of it for me though because it's shorter than the live one and seems to end much to soon.

On the topic of GB...I agree that burning a Prince only copy is the way to go. And, of course, add in Release It. I can't get enough of that jam.

Okay...okay...I gotta put my 3 cents in here!

The Graffiti Bridge's Greatest:

(in no particular order)

New Power Generation ("pardon me 4 breathin', but this is our world 2")

The Question Of U (the rythym and the handclaps...mmm, mmm, mmm)

Elephants & Flowers (Truly a beautiful song, and definately one of my favorites..."he's lookin' 4 a savior in a city full of fools, maybe he just needs a good talker, 2 give him a good talkin' 2"...&..."there will b peace 4 those who love God a lot")

Round And Round (Tevin sings his ass off, Prince in the backing vocals!!...u gotta love this one! The only non-Prince lead vocal on the album that I feel could'a only been done justice by another, and Tevin came thru with this one!)

We Can Funk (Classic George Clinton w/ the right amount of Prince...and it FUNKS!)

Joy In Repetition (much has been said about this one already...the bass line, Prince's vocals and the lyrics...fuggedaboudit!)

Still Would Stand All Time (Oh, what can u say? I feel like I'm at church, listening 2 Prince sing from the choir...Lawd, this one's excellent, it truly stirs my soul!)

Love Machine (A funky addition...just 2 show u The Time still has the shiznit!...produced & arranged by Prince written by Prince, Levi, and Morris, how can it not b added 2 the list?)

Damn! What a fine disc! Thanx 4 reminding me Supa...and 4 putting this site back in2 perspective.

I absolutely agree about Release IT. It would be the only song (and Love Machine) that I included on "My version" of GB. One time I recorded Release IT on tape and somehow it recorded at only half the speed. When I played it back it was like listening to a record at half the speed. It was some majorly funky shit.

Yeah I love Joy In Repetition and I play it when I'm in the mood to go to another world. Another one I play is 3 Chains O' Gold because the part when he breaks it down and says "You say you'll call me and then you don't" I don't know why but for some reason that part takes me to another place and time in my head and I get very emotional I also play Come cuz it goes into so many different directions and goes through so many changes while remaining clear that you should Come and that gets me all happy and shit!
I'm an org elitist... totally unapproachable.

This is a great thread Supa, u put my feelings into words as well... at times I will have this song on repeat, in a dark room, just sitting on the couch and experiencing every aspect of the beautiful song. It sends shivers down my spine every single time, it doesn't matter if it's the tenth time straight I hear it.

This song expresses one aspect of what I enjoy with Prince's music, that there are songs that I will never tire of, that I will always experience like it's the very first time I hear it. They make me smile, laugh or cry, they make me remember things with sadness or joy, but always like it's the first time.

I love Prince for giving me this, the opportunity to experience feelings through his music. Thank you Prince

Has anyone out there ever taken notice of how Prince's career is almost unknown to many "mainstream" music listeners after the PURPLE RAIN period.
It always amazes me when friends hear a post Purple Rain song and asks who is that?

I personaly think the whole GB soundtrack is lovely. Joy In Repetition is just one of them songs u should have on repeat in a dark room for two... wink
Nah but forreal though the music takes u to another dimention. I use to resight the words to my cousin to get her to go to sleep. Hehe she Loved it...

I had a converter listen to Blue Light and say

'who is that? Does he have anymore songs like that? I never really liked Take me with u and Raspberry Beret.'

Therein, I throw on Joy and Repitition, Dorothy Parker, even 2 the 9's

needless to say...they are hooked up and yes, I hooked up.

I always listen to music in the dark. The darker the better. That way your sense of hearing is heightened because you have nothing to distract your eyes. Try listening to Joy in Repetition in the quiet dark. You will be amazed at how this song comes to life.

I agree with you about how this song seems to come to life under those circunstances. Pity, then, that the effect is initially marred by that segue from "We Can Funk" on "Graffiti Bridge".

I need to hear the FULL version of "Joy In Repetition".

I am truly feeling that. I have heard Prince play this live and it is truly a trip to part take in. I have always loved Joy in Repetition. I remember the first time I heard it lived I screamed like a girl because that is my song. You can't help but get lost in its rhythm. It will take you deep inside its lyrics and then tangle, and wrap you up into the fade. It is beautifully put together...a classic.

The only reason the segue ruins it for anybody is because they've heard the original and I agree that it would have been better with the original, HOWEVER there is a vibe that is not lost because of the segue. You come straight out of We Can Funk "We be funkin over here and over and over there aint shit!" and straight into that party segue. It totally fits together perfect. Nothing, not even the segue can ever ruin this song for me smile
