It has been proven again and again that there is no substitute for breastmilk in providing a healthy start to a child's life, yet it is VERY difficult to breastfeed without criticism. To Vagina and others who talk about "public decency laws", you've got it wrong. A woman can legally breastfeed almost anywhere in the US, and nearly half of the states have specific legislation clarifying that right (http://www.lalecheleague.org). Establishments who throw out or otherwise restict breast-feeding mothers have been sued time and time again --- and either settle or lose.

As far as "going somewhere behind closed doors" --- WHERE? The only places I know with a breast-feeding room are Babies R Us and my gynecologist's office. I would never nurse in a bathroom stall (would you eat dinner there?) And it's not like I could spend the 9 months that I did breastfeed sitting at home so that I could breastfeed every 2 hours. Nor is the complaint "let them pump and use bottles" a cure-all either. It isn't any easier to find a place to pump. And if you wait to pump you risk pain, infection, and loss of milk supply.

I have breastfed in dressing rooms, in my car, but I have also breastfed in public when my baby was hungry --- and I frankly doubt that anyone could even tell. With a little practice you can be very discreet. But frankly I used that discretion more because I am rather shy myself, not because I worried about offending anyone.

I guarantee you that I care MUCH MUCH MUCH more about giving my daughter a healthy start in life than about offending anyone's delicate sensitivies.

I am currently breastfeeding my three week old son as I read this forum. It disappoints me to read that so many people are so negative towards breastfeeding. It is absolutely the natural thing to do and is what is best for the child. We would be a healthier society if more of us were breast fed as babies.

I just think that those people that are against it, aren't educated on the subject and should learn more about the wonderful benefits for both the mother and moreso for the child. Breastfeeding is absolutely in no way a sexual thing.

Personally, I don't choose to do it outwardly in public, but it isn't wrong to do so. Although I believe, it should be done in a concealing manner as to not offend people.

I commend anybody who has breast fed their children, because it is a very challenging thing to do. It takes an extreme amount of dedication and support to be successful. Hopefully all of you who are against breasfeeding will look into all of the positve benefits and change your views!

Soy milk does not have all the benefits of mother's milk. Human milk is the "perfect food" for a baby --- many years of evolution have tuned it in ways scientists have not tuned formulas.

Plus, all the children in my and my husband's immediate family were allergic to soy as babies --- so not even an option.

And FACT is that breastfeeding does not cause your breasts to sag. Pregnancy DOES change your breasts forever whether you breastfeed or not. So I suggest that anyone that vain about their breasts perhaps consider not procreating at all.

For a mother to be whipping out her breast in front of people on the train like that, that is very disrespectful of her. She probably did it like she didn't care.

Seriously, all women should be encouraged to breast feed. Ready-made fake bottled mothers milk is not healthy. Actually it is KILLING millions of babies in underdeveloped countries every year. Thats Y multinatiol megacorporation NESTLE has been boycotted (by many churches also) for years!

I think any woman who is able to breast feed should do so until the child is at least one years old. If I was able to be a mother I would breast feed all of my children until they were two years old!
