While it's true that Prince has more range and plays more styles,I appreciate the fact that Rick stayed loyal to the funk.

Exactly. He stayed loyal to the funk even after he had a huge crossover success with "Super Freak". Very few artists remain strong and hard once they've had a crossover hit.

lol C'mon now. I think Rick fulfilled most of his potential. Len never really got started. I'd make the comparison with Mickey Mantle and Babe Ruth (Prince being Ruth in this case).

As for the voice making Rick the better artist as opposed to the one you favor I don't know. I'd be interested to hear your thoughts on Jimi? (rhetorically of course). smile

Jimmi didn't need a voice with all that fucking talent he had playing guitar.....is that what you wanted to hear?

That man is in a class by himself....

I really think Rick was a better all-rounder than Prince, he just couldn't maximize his potential. He did have a flying start, just crash landed.

I'd also say Micky Mantle fulfilled his potential, the booze didn't hinder his game, it just fucked up his liver.

lol

I agree with everything but the Rick James part. What do people think he would've done beyond what he did? He died in his fifties afterall. Even Jimi wouldn't have done much more than he did had he lived. Same with Lennon. By our late twenties and early thirties we've pretty much mapped out our creative paths as artists.

You agree with most of what I said so I'll leave it there and be satisfied.
I think we should have a few more "discussions" in the forums, I would like to trade more opinions with you.

lol

I think both Rick James and Prince are legends in R&B. Both had the pop appeal, so it's hard say. Rick and Prince are true musicians. Rick recorded songs that only Rick James would do and Prince recorded songs that only Prince can do. We all know what Prince can do. Check all over this site. Songs like "Adore", "I Wanna Be Your Lover", "Purple Rain", "Uptown", "1999", "When Doves Cry", "Kiss", etc. For Rick James check songs like "Give It To Me, Baby", "Big Time", "Ghetto Life", "Super Freak", "Glow", "Hard To Get", "Ebony Eye's", "Fire and Desire", etc. I think Dave Chappelle says it best in the season 2 dvd (audio commentary): In the 80's it was Prince, Michael Jackson, Eddie Murphy, and Rick James doing it real big in hollywood. The both have this ability to creat artist and write for others. They both have had spin-off like Vanity 6 and The Mary Jane Girls (to name a few). Prince is gonna have a edge over Rick James because of his constantly release of albums and always putting music out. Before his death, I think Rick could gave Prince a run for his money in terms of a huge come back. Rick had a big buzz with the whole Dave Chappelle skit. At the end of the day despite the feud. Despite what Rick's beef was with Prince. Prince still has respect for Rick and his music. I'm not going to lie, Rick shits on Prince huge on the Dave Chappelle season 2 dvd. I'll go with Prince. But, don't sleep on Rick James. He made music like nobody.

I agree. Here's the deal; Both artists came out with their debut albums in 1978. When u compare those two albums, Rick's album makes P's look like a child put that together. That's how more advanced Rick's first album was over P's. U have to remember Rick had 2 bonafide hit singles off of that album in "You and I" and "Mary Jane". Just the overall songwriting and production and even more crucial, Rick's VISION. P, at that stage, wasn't sure what the fuck he wanted to do. He just knew he could sing in falsetto and play all of his own instruments. He didn't get his shit together untill his second album and really, he didn't get a clear vision of his image untill Dirty Mind. Again, in 81, when both men released albums, look at those two albums. P's Controversy, which was cool, BUT look at Rick's "Street Songs". Again, as much as I adore the song "Controversy", that album can't hold a candle to "Street Songs". Rick already had his style down pat where as P was still defining his. It wouldn't be untill P's album 1999, which was brilliant, when P started to put some distance between him and Rick. Rick wasn't the musician P is nor is Rick nearly as innovative. That showed as clear as day on the 1999 album. I think that album scared the shit out of Rick cuz he simply knew he couldn't fuck with that. EVER.

smart assessment

I get this response to my posts alot.

Except for the 'essment' part.
