Lovesymbol album could of been a classic!

Imagine this album without any rapping or Tony M, take off a couple of sngs and you have

1;My name is prince(without M)
2; Sexy mf(without m)
3; Love 2 the 9's
4; Morning papers
5; Max (without m)
6; Blue light
7;Sweet baby
8; Continental
9; Damn u
10;7
11; God created women
12; Three chains o' gold

CLASSIC!

My sister and I were just talking about this album this morning. We were saying how sometimes you just have to go back and listen to Prince's albums in a different timeframe to really appreciate them. My iPod has really helped me to appreciate some albums more. I ALWAYS loved the Symbol album, despite Tony M's rapping. At the time, I thought Tony M was a weak rapper, but cool. I was in high school then. Now, when I look back on it, he was a cocky prick and his lame rapping hurt some otherwise fantastic songs. I really wish I could hear versions of Love 2 the 9's, Sexy MF, The Max, and basically every other song from D&P and The Symbol album sans M's rapping.

Another good album is Graffitti Bridge. I think because the film sucked people overlook the album. I could do without Tevin Campbell, Mavis and the Time on there (though I realize is was a "soundtrack"). However, the Prince songs are great, some of them are classics! They were pre-M's two-album stint of debauchery.

New Power Generation
Elephants and Flowers
Can't Stop this Feeling I Got
Tick Tick Bang
Thieves in the Temple
Question of U
Joy in Repetition
We Can Funk
Still Would Stand All Time
perfection is a fallacy of the imagination...

Tony M's rapping never bothered me. Yeah there are some songs I don't like as much..and he happens to be them. But he is not the reason I don't like them.

I think it is. I really like the album. Tony M can be a little irritating, but I think the entire album is fun, sexy and full of funk!

I thought if you took out the segues between the songs the album would be better.

Was released in 1992, the follow up to 'Diamonds & Pearls,' has a big gold prince on the front...I'm sure you already have it, just the poster made it seem weird with Lovesymbol being one word....

Is Tony M the one that raps on Willing and Able at the end? If so I kind like that track at least. He kind flows into it and it sounds smooth. But that's the only one I really heard.

Depends on your definition of classic. I mean, song for song it's better than, say Parade-- but of course Parade is more than the sum of its parts. It's not quite on par with SOTT and it certainly doesn't match Purple Rain but you could compare it to Lovesexy, TRC, and maybe 1999. The segues and Tony M are tolerable, yet those are the things that probably deprive it of classic status. However, the quality is there.

I like the "prince" album.

However, it does suffer from 'maximum CD running time syndrome'. Albums that
fill up an entire CD tend to be a bit unfocused and the normal attention span
of the average person will start to wander before it's finished. There's
definitely something to be said for 'vinyl length' albums. As it usually
produces better results when artists limit themselves to a 40-45 minute maximum
album length.

That aside, Tony M's rapping doesn't bother me really, though I always thought
it was inapropriate on 'My Name Is Prince' to have someone else other than
'Prince' featured on it. On that particular track I've always felt that Prince
should've either rapped himself or left the rap off completely.

Also, I have to say that I've also thought the sequencing was a bit off on this
album. It was fine while the album still included all the extra segues, but
once they were removed it meant that certain songs played right next to each
other that didn't quite gel.

Personally I'd liked to have seen it either edited down to a shorter single
album, or spread over 2 discs with all the segues intact.

I really don't mind Tony M...although his personality seems kinda confused . But as him for him in Prince's music...it's not that bad...I kinda like some of his bits.

I cringe whenever i hear it being called LoveSymbol, what a bloody stupid name.
Fuck the funk - it's time to ditch the worn-out Vegas horns fills, pick up the geee-tar and finally ROCK THE MUTHA-FUCKER!! He hinted at this on Chaos, now it's time to step up and fully DELIVER!!

I think Tony M gets a bum rap (no pun intended). Keeping in mind Prince is and was a control. I doubt he let Tony write his own raps. Example 'Gangsta Glam'
'The style we're sportin',
The ladies and the fellas, hmmm
Godfather 3 meets barbarella'

I will bet Tony did NOT write that verse. No shape form or fashion. Even if he did
you can not compare rap from then to what you are used to now.
My bigger problem was Prince using hip hop as much as he did he never needed to. Perhaps just the 808 kicks but the need for a 'rapper' was not called for.
