Darling nikki sounds like it's recorded live in the studio with everyone playing so did Bob z does the drums on that.

Any info would be apprecited, thankyou.

The songs Purple Rain, Baby I'm A Star and I Would Die 4 U were recorded in First Avenue, live with The Revolution. All three songs are on the album and it is a bit hard for Prince to play guitar and drums at the same time; not taking into account overdubs, of course.

But that is still Bobby Z. on drums on those tracks.

If I remember right, Let's Go Crazy and Computer Blue were recorded at The Warehouse with the entire band as a live studio recording. But I might be mistaking. I think Bobby plays drums on those two too.

You're right about everything but Computer Blue, that's just Prince at Sunset Sound recording studios. I guess everywhere except those live tracks it is Prince drumming, including Darling Nikki.

Take Me With U, Purple Rain and Baby I'm A Star have a string section arranged by Lisa and Prince and conducted by W&L. Dr. Fink came up with a keyboard bass line for Computer Blue. The rest is Prince.

Actually; the lines notes are quite comprehensive, when it comes to Prince.

Purple rain is like the ultimate linndrum album. On songs like let's go crazy, computer blue the beautiful ones, and when doves cry it's obviously a sequence of drum-patterns played by the linndrum.

On most of the other songs (the 'live' set) a linndrum was also used, but probably triggered by Bobby. On darling nikki and take me with u there's mainly acoustic drums with a few linn-claps (in darling nikki) for good measure.

FRom this we can deduce that only a few songs (darling nikki and take me with you) actually feature 'real' drums which weren't played by either Bobby or the Linndrum.. Those could easily feature P

Did bobby ever play the drums on stage during that time? Prince and Revolution Live sounded like the Linn Drums all the way thru.

Off topic - I own a linn drum I got from a YARD SALE the guy said "It is my sons atari, you get give me 10 bucks" I kid you not. the cowbell button does not work but otherwise a good find.

Any drums played on that Lp were "played" by Prince. Everything else was programmed thru the Linn Drum Machine. And, on that tour, Bobby Z. played probably 2 songs and hit cymbals for the rest of em!!!! I know: I sat "behind stage" for that show!!!!!

Well, let's not "Kid" ourselves, so to speak. Even when Bobby Z was playing, it was mainly because Prince couldn't play 5 instruments on stage at one time. For the most part, the Revolution did what it was told to do and mirrored whatever it was Prince had worked up on the Linn Drum in his basement.

If you really listen to it now, there really isn't much "drumming" going on...or certainly nothing like what Sheila, Michalel Bland or John Blackwell would eventually bring to the table. Back then, the only thing that Prince needed (or wanted) a band for was for live performances.
