Count the days
Here's a church, here's a steeple Here's a muthafucka that I gotta blow away Here's my chance 2 cure the ills of the people But not until I make this muthafucka pay And oh, baby I count the days (Yeah yes) I count the days Here's the interview, here's the time If I keep your secrets, will U keep mine? If we hurry, we can catch the train If it was left up 2 U, I would die in pain (That's why) I count the days (Oh yeah) Whoa, I'm counting (Oh) Hear me (Hear me) (Days) (Days) Days Counting the days Great day in the morning My choir sing a pretty song Every day I'm with your ass is another day wasted I swear is a day 2 long Counting Like Frankie Beverly without Maze I'm counting Muthafucka, I count the days Can I count on? (Hey) Count on? (Counting) Count on? (Hey yeah) I count the days (Days) Count the days {repeat til fade}

It was about him wanting his contract with WB to end ... as soon as possible. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

I love this little gem of a song. When I read about the evils of drinking, I gave up reading.

I think it´s much more than that, as with most Prince songs.
It could also be interpreted as an example of wasting your precious lifetime doing negative things instead of doing something positive ( here´s my chance to cure the ills of the people but not unitl I make this muthafucka pay , for instance, could be about a young man in a gang controlled neighborhood who, instead of going to college and becoming a doctor or scientist, prefers to kill his opponents first because that´s his first priority ). You know Prince has always emphasized positivity and education in his lyrics...this is in some way reminiscent of Positivity off the Lovesexy album It could also be interpreted as a song about a relationship that has turned into something ugly and bitter, a love-hate relationship that is just a monumental waste of time. ( everyday I´m with your ass is another wasted I swear it´s a day too long etc.etc.) The "catch the train " lyric is reminiscent of Curtis Mayfield´d People Get Ready, and remember o+> would often cover Mayfield´s song during this particular era ( the Ultimate Live Experience /Gold Experience tour in 95) . It means you can achieve things in life if you give your best and don´t give up, if you have enough discipline..again, a lyric about perseverance and being hardworking and positive and ambitiuos. If I was left up to you I would die in pain could mean that you always have to fight for your rights and your goals in order to make it , nothing comes for free, especially in politics....remember the videoclip scenes to this particular lyric showed images of black people in the 60´s marching for equal rights. And so on ...gotta get some sleep now... What If6wuz9 said is also true , like I said, it can be interpreted in different ways...the WB fiasco is definitely part of the interpretation too. " I´d rather be a stank ass hoe because I´m not stupid. Oh my goodness! I got more drugs! I´m always funny dude...I´m hilarious! Are we gonna smoke?"

You´re welcome . It´s one of my favorite Prince songs.The video is nice, too. They have it over at housequake.
Also check out Curtis Mayfield´s People Get Ready ( I´m sure you know this song). When Prince covered that song during the 95 tour I first expected him to play Count The Days and then realized after a few seconds that he was going to sing People Get Ready as an intro for the aftershow ( Paradiso and Belgium ). Both songs are great ,many fans hear the influence of Mayfield´s song but I think Count The Days is still a very original and spiritual song, albeit a bit dark and melancholical. One of my all time favorite songs , he wrote a lot of great songs from 1994-95. I love the cryptic lyrics in this one and the beautiful music, the way he plays acoustic guitar. " I´d rather be a stank ass hoe because I´m not stupid. Oh my goodness! I got more drugs! I´m always funny dude...I´m hilarious! Are we gonna smoke?"
