Why is john. l nelson credited for co- writing parade?

Did he actually help create those songs?

John is credited with co-writing only Venus De Milo and Under The Cherry Moon, but it is not known if he actually contributed anything. It is believed occasionally Prince would credit his father so that he would get some steady income from the royalties.

John is also credited on Around The World In A Day and The Ladder - Prince saying that the chordial basis of the song came from his father.

Actually he is only credited with Christopher Tracy's Parade (not Venus De Milo, my mistake) and Under The Cherry Moon on the booklet (and at ASCAP). The booklet lists all the songs - then in quotation marks lists those 2 songs as being by Prince and his father.

Does it strike you as a little odd, that he wouldn't just give his father a set amount of money each month...rather then leave it up to ascap to do it?...still in all, a nice gesture..but it seems odd to me

It may have been one of those cases of his father not wanting 'charity' ie Prince giving him money directly, but he was okay to receive money for work done, ie 'inspiring' Prince to write those tracks. Allowed him to keep his independence, so to speak.

i've heard tell of this reasoning for his dad's name in the credits, too. whether it's true or not, it was a nice gesture.

There are certainly moments on that album that sound like it was done by and for senior citizens.

Christopher Tracy's Parade is ACTUALLY based on a Wendy Melvoin song titled: Little Wendy's Parade.

I love the album! It's the movie that I didn't much care for.
