Okay, is UTCM actually a good movie?

When reading through the org or any other Prince-related forum, I hear that UTCM is a pretty funny film and I even hear sometimes that it out-does even 'Purple Rain'...But is all this just biased opinions? Could a non-Prince fan enjoy it as much? I've been thinking about picking it up but I would like to know if I can enjoy it as more than just a Prince film. Thanks much org...

I never saw the movie in theatres (I think it was never released in Spain)

Well. I bought the DVD and couldn't stand to watch more than 20 minutes.
My eyes! My ears! omfg
It's that bad nod (My opinion of course)
I never find the time to try and play it again

And I've seen Graffiti Bridge smile
You see, I can stand a long form video but not a bad movie shake

The acting in Purple Rain may have been bad, but the musical performances more than made up for it and made it a cool movie if you dug Prince's music.

But here, the acting is bad and there are no musical performances to make up for it. I think it would have worked far better had it been a series of performances of songs from the album like Purple Rain, that is what people wanted to see Prince do, they didn't go to see Purple Rain for the acting.

The whole storyline is rather dream-like, forced and unlikely, whereas Purple Rain has a gritty urban reality running underneath it. UTCM is definately only for Prince fans, I reckon.

And it's a good thing that the gritty urban reality was carried through to its masterful sequel, Graffiti Bridge smile

It could have been a nice little comedy if Prince had left the writing to profesionals.

It had the frame for a funny light hearted movie. But Prince, being the "visionary" that he was, cranked out the world's most expensive home movie.

Jeez. When compared to Graffiti Bridge, UTCM doesn't look half bad.
If prince.org were to be made idiot proof, someone would just invent a better idiot.

When compared to Graffiti Bridge, snuff films aren't half bad.

UTCM is a great 'bad movie' - holds upto repeat watching.

The music is brilliant, the acting is terrible BUT makes enjoyable watching (as opposed to GB, The Kid and Aura do not make scintillating viewing!)

Great comedy moments (intentional and unintentional). The humour is very 'Prince' - that's why I think a lot of people might not 'get it' (non-fans I've watched it with didn't get it, but then they wouldn't get Cloreen Baconskin, Chocolate, Bob George or Movie Star either).

I think it's a great movie. I like "Purple Rain" much better but I'm a Prince fan and "Purple Rain" has a lot of focus on the music.

I think non-Prince fans would enjoy "Under The Cherry Moon" because it focuses more on a storyline than it does the music. I don't think Prince actually performs any of the songs in the movie except for "Girls and Boys". The rest of them are just played over non-speaking scenes or as background music.

They got that movie out the theaters quicker than old popcorn! I didn't think it was that bad though. It didn't deserve the press it got. I do think Prince had potential as an actor and a director, he showed some of this in Sign of The Times, his problem is himself, just like in his music, he has no one to edit him and he tends to take on way too many things at one time with no thoughts to the outcome. As we see, he kind of soured on the idea of movies, Anthony Berkoff, one of the english actors did say he directed well.

A lot of Princes work would be great if he would leave it up to the professionals to do what they do best like produce, mix, arrange, etc.

He takes way too much control and in the end he's left with, well...You've all seen and heard the finished product....

This is definitely a fans-only Prince movie. I like it mainly because of the soundtrack, the beautiful shots of Nice, the Mountains video at the end, and there are some funny moments..." you did it to Mary's mom! you did it to Mary's mom!". But my girlfriend who is a casual Prince fan HATES it and the few of my friends who have seen it questioned my taste in movies after seeing it.

...oh and its a MILLION times better than Graffiti Bridge. Elephants & Flowers is the only 3 or so minutes of watchable film in the whole thing.

UTCM is a cult classic. I love it, but not because it's a good movie. It is a good look inside Prince's sense of humor at that time.

No but it's fun the watch because it's so bad. The parts that aren't supposed to be funny are hilarious. Then there's always P himself. The hip-hugger tight pants he wore through out the movie are always easy on the eyes. razz

cool It's not the worst movie i've seen. It could have been better if Prince did not decide he had to be the one to direct it. The guy is great when it comes to music. He should leave the movie thing to those who know how to do it. Under The Cherry Moon was not a good movie it was only watchable if you are a Prince fan.
