do you mean slap happy? [Edited 7/16/06 21:34pm] News: Prince pulls his head out his ass in the last moment.
Bad News: Prince wasted too much quality time doing so. You have those internalized issues because you want to, you like to, stop.

i would hardly call News sleepy, if nythin it has a lot more life than both musicology and 3121 combined! Receiving transmission from David Bowie's nipple antenna. Do you read me Lieutenant Bowie, I said do you read me...Lieutenant Bowie

why? This is a great question. I think imho. He saw the massive success of Madonna getting back to her roots, U2 abondoning experimentation for their sound and Bruce Springsteen's massive comeback. He looked around and realized that he had made two musically fantastic yet not readily accessible recordings in The RainBow Children and then N.E.W.S. I think seeing the success of his contempories taught him that being Prince isn't such a bad thing. Now to contradict myself a bit. The big Prince Comeback doesn't start with Musicology and not even the Grammy's with Beyonce. It starts with the ill fated Rave Un2 the Joy Fantastic. Even though I didn't love that cd it showed he was ready to play the game with the Majors again. Without Rave I don't think any of us would see the "BIG COMEBACK" as I like to refer to it. Its not so much the content of Rave but rather Prince's attitude towards the industry that he had been at odds with. I think he was open to them again. All this while not selling out. If you will recall before Musicology became the big cd he was pushing the internet release of "The Chocolate Invasion" (remeber that" Sorry to be long winded but that's my thoughts. I am sure there are others who are going to have more insite into all of this though. Now if we could just get the radio stations to start playing him again..... Rave Un2 the Joy Fantastic. "BIG COMEBACK" I think he was open to them again. am listening to N.E.W.S at the moment...truly beautiful record... in metaphysics, his journey back 'out there' is desribed as 'outward fling'. technically its a journey AWAY from source, or 'home'. when that 'outward fling' is all burnt up, kinda like a fireball burning out.. the journey 'back home' starts again, .... the neat part of this iz, success in the 'commercial world' is the equivalent of success in the 'home world'... which is where 3121 and N.E.W.S. are neat twins... personal opinions of both records aside...to me they represent polar opposites... but both are contained within each other... the 'ecstacy' is in that balance... imo. ok so you think it had sumthin to do with his fans? Well! I love him. but I'm his harshest critic! I didn't buy anything between Parade and Diamonds & Pearls. Then nothing between D & P and Musicology because I thought it was below par 4 him. I'm not including N.E.W.S. That's one I want but can't find in Oz! I'm sure I'm not alone.

you do realise that N.E.W.S. > Musicology > 3121 .. means NEWS was greater or better than Musicology, which was greater or better than 3121, which means he is getting worse, though that doesn't seem to be what this thread means.
not quite sure what this thread is about. this message brought to you by logic.

The Dream That Must Be Interpreted
This place is a dream. Only a sleeper considers it real. Then death comes like dawn, and you wake up laughing at what you thought was your grief. But there's a difference with this dream. Everything cruel and unconscious done in the illusion of the present world, all that does not fade away at the death-waking. It stays, and it must be interpreted. All the mean laughing, all the quick, sexual wanting, those torn coats of Joseph, they change into powerful wolves that you must face. The retaliation that sometimes comes now, the swift, payback hit, is just a boy's game to what the other will be. You know about circumcision here. It's full castration there! And this groggy time we live, this is what it's like: A man goes to sleep in the town where he has always lived, and he dreams he's living in another town. In the dream, he doesn't remember the town he's sleeping in his bed in. He believes the reality of the dream town. The world is that kind of sleep. The dust of many crumbled cities settles over us like a forgetful doze, but we are older than those cities. We began as a mineral. We emerged into plant life and into the animal state, and then into being human, and always we have forgotten our former states, except in early spring when we slightly recall being green again. That's how a young person turns toward a teacher. That's how a baby leans toward the breast, without knowing the secret of its desire, yet turning instinctively. Humankind is being led along an evolving course, through this migration of intelligences, and though we seem to be sleeping, there is an inner wakefulness that directs the dream, and that will eventually startle us back to the truth of who we are. - Jelaluddin Rumi, 13th century mystic poet " the embassy shut to keep the fools out " - as above, so below.

It can also just mean a simple progression (whether it's chronological or just helping someone find direction in a sea of application menus)... The world isn't stuck in values and mathematics, dumbass. [Edited 7/19/06 14:05pm]

What good is using shorthand if it is open to multiple interpretations? Kinda dilutes whatever point you are trying to make.

A bit of an oversimplification, IMO.
NEWS has some funkily chaotic moments on it. Musicology and 3121 have some boring ones, too. P just went a bit more commercial, but it would be silly to sleep on the jazz cd. Shucks, the bassline from "Call My Name" first showed up on NEWS.

What good is using shorthand if it is open to multiple interpretations? Kinda dilutes whatever point you are trying to make. It does no good to debate the fact of multiple interpretations because it IS already a fact. I would have never read it as a value judgement of each album, and, obviously, the OP never intended that.

thats right it was a chronological reference...but its very interesting to me that some have viewed it as a downward spiral.....
were u guys happier when he was low key just doin the net thang and small tours? i didnt come along til just prior to N.E.W.S. being released, and it was kinda nice and cosy.... then suddenly off we go back out into the 'big bad world' for another spin around a distant sun... judging his musical work doesnt really feel right to me never has, its pretty obvious he can do pretty much anything, whether that's an album like N.E.W.S. or a return to his future-past..... my question was more to do with why the decision to go back 'out there'? have presumed til now that it might've been with intention to inject the commercial; world with a bit of musical love juice, cuz its sorely lacking... the whole 'real music by real musicians' move was nice, but there were a few crucial factors he might've overlooked..... kinda like a litle kid who wants to save the world one more time by flying through the air at tremendous speeds.....but forgetting to attach his Wings. 3121 dropped the penny in the slot in such a cool cool way. he's a very smart man...to be able to dip into that part of himself at will, quite deliberately. mayb hangin out in mightclubs helps him stay connected to whats happnin on the street..... now there's Tamar, who's lookin at entering an industry at its absolute WORST stage in the history of commercial music. its colder out there than it has ever been, the snakes are even bigger, the jaws are even wider and the claws grip onto you in the tightest way ever..... i guess mayb i'm a little confused... N.E.W.S. > Musicology > 3121 > Tamar? can someone help me out here? " the embassy shut to keep the fools out " - as above, so below.

N.E.W.S. > Musicology > 3121 [b]> Tamar? can someone help me out here?[/b] Confused about what? Artists don't stay the same, they move on. It's not like he forced anybody to listen to his music or to like the proteges he introduces to us. You have a choice either you like what music he puts out or you don't, nothing wrong with that. It's impossible to please everyone, no one can. But I it's good that he's helping out other up and coming artists. I'm sure they'll be others after Tamar that he will introduce to us. Prince doesn't have to prove anything to anyone. He's been there already. I think it's nice that he's smiling at all this criticism being thrown in his face about Tamar. I applaud him for that. Tamar will be ok, there's snakes in every industry and I'm sure she's aware of that, nothing new, she'll be fine. Keep bringing it P, There will always be critics and you can't please everyone, that would be impossible, but those he can please and appreciate his music and the proteges he introduces to us, will always have his back. He's in for the long run and he knows it's not over. [Edited 7/20/06 6:14am] [Edited 7/20/06 6:23am] [Edited 7/20/06 7:53am]
