I bought that video, "An evening with Kevin Smith", not knowing that would be on there. Imagine My suprize when That segment came on.

There's suposed to be a second interview Kevin Smith video comming out that tells more.
News: Prince pulls his head out his ass in the last moment.
Bad News: Prince wasted too much quality time doing so.

Yeah my boyfriend is a big Kevin Smith fan and was watching it and then Kevin started talking about the Prince thing and I was like "Whaa? Huh? Since when did Kevin Smith work with Prince???"

He went into how Prince was a JW and the Rainbow Children album and I was like "HUH? Prince is a JW????" lol When did THIS happen????

I wasn't following Prince during that era so I knew nothing about his new religion or the Rainbow Children album or anything that was going on with him. Needless to say I was pretty intrigured.

Well, you're not allowed to post youtube links so I should think you're about to get snipped by the mods.

This celebration was back in 2001 so this has been out a fair while now. I think this segment is hilarious and even though it should show up Prince, I actually think it makes him more fascinating and mysterious than before! Prince seems as difficult and self-obsessed as I always imagined him to be - it was Kevin's own fault for not doing a bit of research on the type of person he would be dealing with, or actually standing upto Prince when it mattered. But in the end, he's got a huge amount of mileage out of the experience.

I don't know there's much more that Kevin could add in a follow-up documentary, I have heard that Prince was upset to find Kevin was never made to sign a non-disclosure agreement and sacked the relevant employee. He also had a dig at Kevin about the language in one of his films and walked out of one or something, and I think Kevin had a dig back.

Kevin's latest film is Clerks 2 which is coming soon.

Yeah, I remember that part. Very funny and believeable. Bt looking back on it, I didnt realize the segment was really that long. So about a third of his show was about Prince.

As far as I know, the employee in question had left Paisley Park anyway when Kevin came up with the stories.

The film in question was "Jersey Girl". It's reported that Prince walked out and said something like "I guess that's what happens when the potty mouth don't work for you anymore". Kevin's answer, as reported: "And I fuckin' hated Crystal Ball. so I guess we're even." (or something similar)

Btw, I laughed my ass off when I first watched it. Kevin's stories are the bomb!!!

If there should be legal problems with the youtube links: Housequake.com also has the material, it used to be up in the video forum - if it isn't anymore, you can request it.

Kevin Smith acts like a disgruntled contractor that didn't get to finish the job because his work is terrible. Maybe Prince didn't want to talk to him because he was just floored over how bad the guy's stuff really was?

I really don't know but I've been in the situation where I have had to let people go that actually had a pretty good rep- but when they worked for me it was a whole different story.

I have never met P and wouldn't know what to say to him if I did - but it sure seems like he gets a lot of criticism from people that only know him from buying his music.

I think it's jealousy and envy-

Simply Put, that's not the truth. Mr. Smith did well enough with the idealistic and vague requierments of Prince's "wet dream". Prince thought it would be something it wasn't, Prince is the one that thought others would come to some monumental revolation. The people Prince chose to be in the documentary where confused at to what was going on. Keven was confused as to what should go on. And Prince, well he's just confused.

To be fair, that is only Kevin's version of things, and I should think there's a certain amount of exaggeration and ommission for comedic effect. It would be completely idiotic of an established director of motion pictures to agree to do a movie without knowing any of even the basic arrangements, such as what crew and equipment would be used, etc. beforehand, which is the way Kevin presents it. There probably was a lot more discussion behind the scenes, unless Kevin really was that naive...

"If the bra fits."

Kevin smith tells a lengthy (very lengthy) prince
anecdote. It's hilarious.

I found this to be a touch mean spirited but cool just the same. It sheds light into why that little pairing didn't workout. One thing I will remind people to be mindful of is that this is just one side of the story.

Now I sincerely doubt we will ever hear Prince's side of the story but suffice to say. Prince wouldn't be where he is today by being stupid. As some on this site seem to want to make him out to be regardless of his successes. Also I think the Rainbow Children did exactly what Prince wanted it to do which was start a debate about Religion.

The thing that seems to concern me most is the "heat" this is the second time I have heard about Prince having some kind of function and an unbearable "heat" due to lack of air conditioning being present. I believe the purple ticket show was hotter than hell too.

Its pretty obvious to even the casual fan that mega rockstars get to create their own world. I mean this ain't nothing new. Madonna, Micheal Jackson, Bruce, Elvis, James Brown, David Bowie, Mick Jagger. All of them live in their own little worlds. Its cool but its still interesting to hear Smith explain it as an observer. I also found it telling that he never told Prince "No I can't and won't do this." If you think you can't do something don't sign on I say.

Anyway I also found it fascinating that Prince has 50 (according to Smith) full production music videos for songs we've never heard that will never see the light of day. Its obvious Prince thinks for the future. I honestly believe he is creating little things to live on way past him.

I mean Tupac recorded so much music that some people think he's still alive. Elvis is as popular to day as he was ever. I believe Prince means to capitolize on this type of fame well after his death. That is just really cool to me. So just think after his death fresh material will be released for many more years to come!!

REMARKABLE.

fascinating stuff!

I didn't think the Kevin monologue was mean-spirited at all. Prince acts like an unappreciative dick sometimes and here's a normal guy calling him on it. Good for you, Kevin (natural comedian, too)

It was damned unprofessional not to thank Kevin (and especially not to pay him, that fucking cad), but hearing about P being "away working on some music" at the end of the week almost makes me feel a little sad for him. He knew that not only was his film not going to Cannes, but even his fans didn't like or understand the record. Hopes crushed.

So he went off to create that piece of shit Musicology.

Time to come on out of the cave, dude

Kevin Smith 2: Evening Harder has been delayed (once again -- confirmed by Kevin Smith this week while promoting Clerks II) until December 2006, end of this year.

Probably to coincide with the DVD release of Clerks II.

WOW! What a story! It was very funny and revealing. It's better than anything Kevin could have written about Prince himself. It doesn't surprise me that Prince isn't used to hearing people tell him no. Also, the bit about his workout clothes was HILARIOUS! I gonna have to get myself down to Nordstrom... lol

You really have to watch the entire "Evening With Kevin Smith" to understand the liberties he takes. To only watch this one bit, out of context, it may seem mean spirited, but it's not...he's the same with everyone in his stories.

I thouroughly enjoyed the story and the guy is a great storyteller. However, I must say that I could see how Prince would possibly be irritated by this guy, we only got one side of the story, Smith has got that white irreverence and sarcasm that just rubs us folks of color wrong. Also, as a professional, he should have gotten stuff straightened out beforehand. And for every story like this we hear of Prince (which does sound like him unfortunately) we have stories by people like Chaka Khan who stated that she was treated very well and taken care of when they worked together. Prince, as someone once said of Duke Ellington, is very giving and very selfish at the same time.

Yes I can see what you are saying...plus Smith seems to be more crass and blunt and I just don't think that is Prince's sense of humor so I can see how their personalities could clash. Some people for whatever reason seem to offend eachother's sensabilities and people do interact with diffrent people in different ways.

they only seem to snip the links that have prince stuff on them. prince's people get pissy when we post stuff prince 'owns.' or things that have his image or music in them. (like tv reports) but this belongs to kevin smith who is not likely to mind it being posted (as if he did he would have asked for it to me removed from youtube).
