After reading so many threads concerning this matter, I felt the need to respond. I've been a fan of Prince since the late 70's. I'm old enough to remember when songs like "I wanna be your lover" and "sexy dancer" were released. If any of you remember those early days, you know that Prince was not considered a"commercial" act. Prince was not your typical "black act". He was considered during the Dirty Mind/Controversy years as a underground/cult like figure. Altough those early albums were outstanding, they didn't generate large album sales. The only period in Prince's career were he was "commercial" was during the 1999/Purple Rain years. Since then his album sales have fallen off. However, Prince is as creative now as he was during the late 70's and all throughout the 80's and 90's. All I'm trying to say is don't get caught in the hype of these other "commerical" acts. Appreciate the fact that Prince has been performing for over 25 years and continues to produced amazing/groundbreaking music.

It seems prince has lost the magic yall.He has isolated america with his weirdness and his insistance on sounding like the 70's in his music instead of futuristic like he did in the 80's.I hate to say if But going at the current rate prince will be a lounge act in vegas in 5 years guaranteed.I think he should retire in Los Angeles and become a guitar institue instructor.Or maybe do the lucrative thing and do movie soundtracks exclusively.I don't know,I just hate to see people laughing at him and teasing him like they were today when I was on the subway.....It's embarassing..What do you think he shoul do?
Remember don't be selfish and say release more subpar crap like we got from these last two albums.What will make history shine better on our fallen hero?

There's a big difference between a one song performance on a tv show and a live concert/show. If the reaction at BET is sooooo important to you, and it bothers you and Prince is not doing it for you anymore, then hang it up, take a break---leave!

Exactly, ccollin88, you seem awfully concerned about what other people think of Prince. It's a little bit like middle school to be so concerned with public perception. What? You think that people don't know that Prince is one of baddest musicians ever (live or otherwise)? Again, if you don't dig Prince anymore why not just leave it alone?

I guess I don't understand what you want to have happen? Do you want this entire website to jump up and collectively agree with you? Do you want every member here to join you in your Prince pity fest? Not everyone is the same, and obviously your views lean toward he negative and shitty. Again, I think Prince is better than ever. How are you gonna prove me wrong?

You point out 3121 and the BET awards. Well, fuck I got that beat. I could point out Prince's horrendous and lackluster stage time at the James Brown show. This was the 80's at the so called "peak of his powers". You know what happened? He went onstage after MJ, confused the crowd, got his own glove thrown at back at him, and knocked over a stage prop lamp. Now THAT was a bad crowd reaction. Maybe you think Prince should have retired then huh? God knows what people were saying about him then.

Maybe he should have quit earlier in his career when he opened for The Stones and got booed off of the stage and pelted with shit.

The bottom line is this: If you don't dig Prince anymore just hang it up. However, trying to get others to view Prince as you do because of public perception is just plain dumb.

The point is, if the FACTS are that nobody cares about Prince anymore, and he's not selling or performing good anymore, and popularity and high record sales are so important to you, then be my guest and continue to dwell and focus on the past and stay away from his current stuff, or move on to other artist.

I don't see the point on a constant bitch fest about him not being like he was in the 80's. The 80's is in the past, you could either dig his new stuff, ignore it and move on. I mean okay, we understand, Prince aint the Prince you want him to be anymore, so what do you do now?
