This is 1 of the least discussed aspects of Prince's music.

His background harmonies R so brilliant, they oftentimes go right over most listeners heads. Not only R they brilliant, they R also daring and unique. I had 2 school a friend of mine in D.C. once... Not only was this cat a musician, a keyboard player with a good ear, he also loved Prince's music. I was playing some Prince 4 him and another friend, Freddie Peña - who tours and records with Meshell Ndegeocello, recorded on Maxwell's Urban Hang Suite, and is just a fantastic and versatile keyboardist. So, I'm pointing out Prince's background harmonies during a verse, and my other friend, who shall remain nameless, says, "Well anybody can do that with a $3,000 harmonizer". I was like, "Huh? This is Prince, fool... I thought U knew, he's been doing this since '78... He doesn't need any shortcuts." Then, I backed it up by rewinding the track over and over, 2 show how the notes were changing in a way that is impossible with a harmonizer... pointing out different inflections on each note, etc. THEN, Freddie backs me up by saying, "Yeah, this is Prince, man. He can do that. U can't do that with a harmonizer..."

OK... My story is over, and there is no way I can pick my favorite usage of background vox. That's even more difficult than trying 2 pick my favorite funk guitar part.

In summary, his use of rythym and harmony with his backing vox R the most unique I've ever heard. This is one of the most brilliant aspects of his music, and is equal 2, or greater than most horn and string arranging, in terms of it's placing and daring harmonies. Imagine a piece with just Prince's vocals, and Clare Fischer's string arrangement...

OK... I'm done.

U always hear me talking about The Funk, and the state of today's R&B. Thank U 4 getting me going on this.

Peace,

G.

Two that come to mind immediately are:

From the beginning, FOR YOU, the song...beautiful singing and those
background harmonies are heavenly.

And, LOVE, THY WILL BE DONE, his version, is inspired.
Thanks for the laughs, arguments and overall enjoyment for the last umpteen years. It's time for me to retire from Prince.org and engage in the real world...lol. Above all, I appreciated the talent Prince. You were one of a kind.

Love your post, I hardly hear anyone talk about his background harmonies (vocals). I listen 2 Prince just about everyday and its fascinating 2 hear this in his songs. Prince has the most beautiful voice, the voice of an Angel and what he's able 2 do with that voice is absolutely genius. There is so much 2 love and appreciate in his music. Graycap mention 3121 and Satisfied… there u go

Thank u sitruk7! This is a wonderful thread….wink

You guys are right - Princ's harmonies are to die for, as I believe Lisa Coleman once said.

My favorites:

For You.
Fuck the funk - it's time to ditch the worn-out Vegas horns fills, pick up the geee-tar and finally ROCK THE MUTHA-FUCKER!! He hinted at this on Chaos, now it's time to step up and fully DELIVER!!
woot!
