Apple Ipod?

A little off topic, but I was wondering if anyone here uses the Apple Ipod with Windows 98/98SE...I know they're supposed to release a Windows version late August, but looking on Ebay and other sites, it seems that there are a lot of the Ipods first released for sale that claim to be compatible with Mac/PC...

Apple has not released the software for PC yet, but it is coming soon. You will need to have a FIREWIRE (IEEE1394) equipped computer.

Thanks...
Yeah, I got the firewire card yesterday...waiting on the official PC version to come out later this month.
But I looked on Ebay thinking I could get a pricing on it, and saw that most of the ads are claiming that they're compatible with Windows. Confusing...I think I'll just wait until the PC version is released...

There is a software option called Xplay that will allow one to use the older Ipods on Windows PCs.

Of course there are new Ipods coming out from Apple that will support Windows PCs directly. BUT, you won't be able to use those on a Mac (the drive is formated differently) I believe.

If you can pick up an older Ipod cheap and then buy the Xplay software; then you'll be able to use the Ipod on both Macs and PCs.

Now you may not have any need for this..but if you did; that would be the way to go. And of course you already have Firewire. I'm guessing the new PC Ipods will be USB. Probably USB 1. (Since USB 2.0 still young; I don't see Apple making the PC Ipod USB 2 and forcing buyers to get a USB 2 card) Which is slower than Firewire.

The PC version will not have USB. Apple is making the same unit for PCs... the software is the difference. The PC iPods still use Firewire. Apple is right when they say that USB is far too slow for their device. Firewire is MUCH faster and was invented by Apple, so they will use their own technology.

From Apple's website:

"iPod for Windows

Good news for the millions of Windows users who own PCs with built-in FireWire (also known as i.LINK and IEEE1394): In response to insistent demand from PC users, the world’s best MP3 player now does Windows. iPod fully integrated with the award-winning PC media player — MUSICMATCH Jukebox Plus™. So every song you add or playlist you create will automatically transfer to your iPod."

Thanks...this pretty much explains the Mac/PC references on Ebay. I always though the first releases would only work on Mac, which is why I didn't buy one in the first place. Glad I didn't...as IceNine stated, the new Ipods are going to use Firewire as well. The dealer said you just pop it into a PCI slot, add the software and you're good to go. So I bought one. Now I just have to wait for the new iPods!

Speaking of which, I'm in the market for a good MP3 player that's not extremely expensive (under $300). I was thinking about the iPod. Ideas, input, suggestions...?

You might wanna try out one of the Sony minidisc players...
But, check out the msg boards first...

http://www.musiclub.sonys.../index.jsp

Lots of problems with the software, and people are letting it be known.

The hardware is great...I used it for about 2 months. Sounds great, nice flexibility, small. Used it in the gym all the time. But then, the software started trippin...many, many bugs. I think it has something to do with all of the anti-piracy stuff in it. So I returned it, and waiting for the iPod to come out.
Anyway, if you can get it to work, it's great. I got it because it was cheaper than the iPod, but now...I figure I may as well pay for something knowing that i'll have it for a long time.
